GERALD HAMILTON Obituary

GERALD "HAM"

LEON HAMILTON

Apr. 4, 1938 – Jan. 26, 2025

Gerald "Ham" Leon Hamilton, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully on January 26, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on April 4, 1938, in Silver City, New Mexico, Ham moved with his family to Brawley, California, when he was three years old.

In October 1955, at just 17 years old, Ham enlisted in the Army. Throughout his service, he was stationed at Fort Ord, CA, Navels, PA, and Fort Knox, KY. He was honorably discharged in October 1958.

Ham's life was forever changed when he met the love of his life, Tammie Bowman, at Armando's in Brawley. They shared 58 wonderful years of marriage until Tammie's passing in December 2023. Together, they raised six children, 16 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren, creating a legacy of love and cherished memories.

A dedicated auto mechanic and tow truck driver for over 60 years, Ham worked tirelessly to provide a loving home for his large family. His passion for the outdoors earned him the affectionate nickname "Desert Rat." He loved taking his family on camping trips and exploring the deserts of Imperial County. This passion led him to volunteer for De Anza Search and Rescue for 52 years, during which he held various leadership positions, including President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Training Officer, and Board Member. The California Office of Emergency Services honored Ham for his unwavering dedication and selfless service.

Ham was preceded in death by his wife, Tammie; parents, James and Phyliss Hamilton; stepfather, Robert Boatwright; sisters, Wanda (Danny Graham) and Joyce (Darrell Ramey); and brother-in-law, Mel Manees.

He is survived by his children: Kelly Quinn, Jon (Teri) Hamilton, Jerry Hamilton, Tim (Sandi) Hamilton, Suger (Brian) Floyd, and Sammi (Eric) Rorrer. He is also survived by his twin sister, Joan Manees; brothers, Jim (Fernanda) and Jess (Erica) Hamilton; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate Ham's life will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 10 a.m. at First Christian Church, 215 N. Imperial Ave, Brawley, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to De Anza Search and Rescue or Glenora Baptist Church.

Some of my fondest memories are of Ham, my dad, and their Del Norte desert crew exploring the washes and mountain ranges to the northeast. Those trips were legendary.
