Jeanne Vogel Obituary

JEANNE VOGEL

Feb. 17, 1934 Jan. 2, 2022

Jeanne Vogel, 87, of El Centro went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 2, 2022. Jeanne was born on Febuary 17, 1934 in Artesia, California.

She spent of most of her childhood in Lemon Grove, California, where her family operated a dairy farm. She met the love of her life, Hans, they were friends for years before going on their first date at the SchwingFest in San Diego. After their first date, they were engaged and two weeks later, Hans, was drafted to the Korean War. For nearly two years, she wrote a letter to him every day and he wrote her back every other day. She kept his letters to this day. Within three months of his return from war on April 17, 1955 they were married and she moved to her new home in El Centro. Her first child was born a year later, Butch, followed by four more children, Mike, Yvonne, Karl and Ted. While raising five children, she was an active member in the IV Swiss Club, assisted in the farming business, earned her bachelor's degree and was an active leader in 4-H. For 25 years, she worked at St. Mary's school teaching physical education and scholastic sports. She held a lifetime teaching credential and substitute taught at many schools around the Imperial County. She was the first and only woman to be elected to the Imperial County Board of Supervisors (1986 to 1990) and served as President of the Southern California Board of Supervisors. She had a passion for students and education, serving on the Central Union High School Board for 28 years. She loved philanthropic work and would often help the Central booster club and other local student groups with fundraisers.

She had a very large heart and an even bigger kitchen table. Anyone who entered her home was treated as family, given advice and provided a meal. She loved her Swiss music, and it would often be playing loudly in her home. She was happiest when surrounded by her family, including her twelve grandchildren and her eleven great-grandchildren. She loved teaching them to bake cookies and gave the best hugs. She was a remarkable and beautiful woman who lived a very full life. She will be greatly missed by her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Timothy, and her sister, Geraldine.

She is survived by her husband, Hans; Her five children, Butch (Sandy) Vogel, Mike (Karen) Vogel, Yvonne (John) Burgun, Karl (Amy) Vogel and Ted (Heidi) Vogel; Her twelve grandchildren, Kristy (Nick) Curry, Robert (Kayla) Vogel, Theresa Vogel, Matt (Allison) Vogel, Anthony Vogel, Brittany (Dillon) Weiderman, Brian (Savannah) Burgun, Brianna (Dustin) Driscoll, Ted Vogel, Austin Vogel, James Vogel, and Bella Vogel.

A Rosary will be held at 7 pm on Friday, February 4, 2022 at St. Mary Catholic Church in El Centro. The funeral will be held at 10 am on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at St. Mary Catholic Church. Graveside services will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in El Centro. The family will host a reception following the services.

We will never forget Jeanne and her wonderful personality. One memory that stands out is the day
Jeanne and Hans attended our son
Brett“s memorial in the desert hills
at The Dip to place flowers by climbing the sand hill with all of us. They were her beautiful home
grown white roses.

Mrs. Vogel was a remarkable woman, a roll model to many such as myself. I loved going to 4H and sewing at her home. Always with positive guidance to give with such a kind and loving heart. PE was always somthing to look forward to when Mrs. Vogel was your teacher. Prayers for your family and may she rest in peace.

Jeanne Vogel made a lasting impression on me as a little girl at St. Mary's. I remember playing volleyball with her as our coach and of course remember everything she did to help us grow in 4-H. She was fun, thoughtful, compassionate and knew how to get the best out of each of us. She is one of those rare people that touches the lives of many and will be forever remembered. My thoughts are with the Vogel family.
