JOHN ROBERTS Obituary

John was born to George and Lola Roberts, the youngest of three sons. He was born in Oklahoma at the Talihini Choctaw Nation Hospital. John was very proud of his Choctaw heritage and later of being a Choctaw Vietnam Veteran. The family moved to Brawley, California in 1945. Growing up in the small agricultural town of Brawley was an idyllic childhood for John that was filled with brothers, cousins and friends. He graduated from Brawley Union High School in 1961. He was a gifted athlete. In his senior year he was the only athlete to letter in football, basketball, baseball, and track and field. Later, while attending Imperial Valley College he played on a championship football team and was inducted into the Imperial Valley Football Coaches Association "Hall of Fame" for his leadership and talent. Drafted into the Army in 1965, he was selected for Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Georgia. En route to Vietnam, he was stationed at Ft. Ord, California in 1967 where he met his future wife, Susan. John was a distinguished and highly decorated Vietnam Veteran. John received a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and four commendation medals all with distinguishing "V" for Valor in combat. John also received three Purple Hearts for injuries he received in combat and four Army Commendation medals for Meritorious Service in his military career. In 1969 he and Susan were married and he continued his military career until 1975. After the Army, he was involved in several business ventures in Southern California until 1981. At that point, he and the family, which now included two children and two dogs, moved to San Ramon and he became the owner of Livermore R. V. and Shell Center. Shortly after that, they joined their local Presbyterian Church. John quickly became involved by joining the Usher team. He was dedicated to serving the church in any capacity and served on Session several times. Later, he and Susan became charter members of San Ramon Presbyterian Church and he continued his service there. He closed his business in 2000 and eventually became the Facilities Manager at their church. He enjoyed working at the church and being with people of faith. After his retirement in 2009, he enjoyed golfing and being a grandfather to his two grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother George Noland Roberts. He is survived by his wife Susan; son Scott; daughter Denise (Shane); grandchildren April and Brady O'Quinn; brother Bruce (Bev) Roberts, and numerous family members. John will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and a committed servant to his Lord, Jesus Christ. Services will be held at San Ramon Presbyterian Church on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at 2 p.m. Inurnment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
