JON ROONEY Obituary

Jon Fredrick Rooney, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son and brother, passed away on March 15, 2025. He was 61 years old.
Jon, a lifelong resident of the Imperial Valley, was born in El Centro on March 13, 1964, to Fred and Kathryn Rooney.
Jon was a loving, dedicated husband, father and grandfather. Jon enjoyed hunting, fishing and he treasured time spent with his kids and grandchildren. His favorite pastime was summer vacations at the beach with his wife and family.
Jon will be remembered as an amazing family man, who was wholly devoted to his wife and three kids. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle & grandfather. His enthusiasm, humor, and integrity will be missed by his friends, family and colleagues alike. Jon's memory will remain in our hearts his legacy will live on for generations to come with his kindness, generosity, and unforgettable voice and spirit.
Jon was a proud employee of the Imperial Irrigation District for 33 1/2 years. During that time he held several positions, all of which were in Generation. Jon began as a Mechanic Generation Apprentice in 1992, working his way up the ranks over the years to Superintendent Generation Maintenance in 2017. Jon was preceded in death by his mother, Kathryn.
Jon is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Gabriela Cordova Rooney; sons, Jon F. Rooney Jr. and Justin T. Rooney (Emily); daughter, Maygan Kathryn Rooney; grandchildren, Kaysen & Kensley (Jon Jr.) & Robin & Elsa (Justin).
Jon is also survived by his father, Fred R. Rooney and stepmother, Diana Rooney; brother, Fred Pumphrey (Libby); sisters, Shaun Rooney Irvin (Tex) and Chrystal Rooney; sisters-in-law, Norma Galindo (Fidel); Monica Gear (Kanealii); Sandy Coone (Tom), numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many friends and colleagues.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the Old Eucalyptus Schoolhouse, located at 796 W. Evan Hewes Hwy. in El Centro, at 1-5 p.m.

I worked with Jon at IID on a power plant project in 2015-2016. I was a service engineer and was in El Centro for about 8 months. Jon was my contact whom i worked with in the daily planning, scheduling, and overseeing the work on the IID equipment. He and I became good friends during that project and i had the utmost respect for him. We shared ideas and agreed on most all subjects we ever discussed, whether it be work related or just a topic about life in general.
I was very saddened to hear of his passing and pray that all family members find peace at this very difficult time.

My deepest condolences to Gabby and the family. Our parents have always spoke highly of Jon, his loyalties to his family, work ethic, and kindness were admirable. Although we did not see each other often, our time shared and Jon's quiet chuckle, with a similar sense of humor (raised by the same tribe), navigating life and family was always appreciated! Jon was always kind and supportive of, Randy and I (step siblings), and he will be greatly missed!
