Leonard L. Schnittker (Len) was born on June 21, 1935, in Wichita, Kansas. His final chapter came to a close on February 13, 2024, in Brawley, California, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Len's story began in the heartland of America, where the values of hard work and commitment were instilled in him from a young age. He graduated from Cunningham High School, Pratt County Community College, and Emporia State University with a degree in education.
He proudly served his country as a United States Marine, where he was a member of the baseball team. His skill as a pitcher caught the eye of the Dodgers organization. It was while playing baseball in Great Falls, Mt., Len met Lola Garberg, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage, a testament to their unbreakable bond.
After graduation, Len signed a contract with Brawley Union High School, where he spent more than forty years as a teacher and coach. After retirement, he assisted his daughter home school his four grandchildren; he also taught each grandchild many life lessons, including how to drive. He often reflected that this experience brought him his greatest joy.
Len was a prolific reader, sports enthusiast and collected hunting and fishing equipment. Also, one of his great loves was officiating sports. He finally hung up his whistle at the age of 75.
Len was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Bess Schnittker; and his brother, Bill Schnittker.
Len is survived by his wife, Lola; daughter, Alisa Cunningham (William); grandchildren, Taylor, Dallas, Jayden, and Logan; brother, Allan (Louise); sister, Linda; and sister-in-law, Joann.
Len's life story encourages us to chase our dreams with vigor and to face our battles with courage. As we remember Len, let us carry forward the light shone as he walked with Jesus and let it guide us in creating our own personal relationship with Christ.
Memorial service is scheduled for March 2, 2024 at 11 am at Frye Chapel, 799 S. Brawley Ave. Brawley, CA. Reception to follow at Stockman's Club, 275 Marjorie Ave. Brawley, CA. All are welcome.

My deepest condolences to Lens family. I worked with Len at BUHS and in the Imperial Valley Basketball Officials Association in which he and Vern were the perfect pair of teachers in welcoming a female into the IVBOA. Len was the teacher that left an impression on all his students. He was very proud to be a BUHS WILDCAT member and we were all better for it. We are all proud to have had you in our lives as a teacher, member and a friend. RIP.
