LOREN M. HOLMES
July 10, 1951 - Sept. 25, 2009
Loren M. Holmes was born in Los Angeles, California, July 10, 1951 to Gladys E. Thomas and Jeffrey Holmes. At a very early age Loren moved to Niland, California where he was raised by his Mom Gladys and grandmother Maggie Hare Thomas, also known to the family and friends as Nanny. He started his school days in Niland, and moved on to Calipatria High School, where he excelled both in academics and in sports, loving them all. He played varsity baseball his freshman year and in his sophomore, junior, and senior years. In his senior year he received MVP of the year. In 1968 Loren and his fellow teammates made it to CIF Championship making it a most memorable football season for the Calipatria Hornets and also to CIF in 1969, with Loren being Captain of the team. During his high school years, he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track and field. Upon graduation Loren began attending IVC leaving there and joining the United States Army in 1970, where he proudly served his country until 1972 before returning home.
Loren's work career began with a couple of miscellaneous jobs before he joined IID on October 29, 1973, where he started as a treetrimmer, with promotions leading to his last position which was Superintendant, Imperial Line Construction. Loren held this title until September 25, 2009 when at about 2:00am God called another of his precious children home leaving all of us with blessed and beautiful memories. His accomplishments were many, his friends were real, his family was first and number one, the little ones loved him. He always had an opinion, sometimes expressing it and many times keeping them to himself.
Loren is survived by his wife, Jean Zumalt Holmes; sons, Loren Ian Holmes, Aaron William Holmes and daughter Christina Jean Holmes. He also leaves to treasure his memory, brothers, Glenn E. Cadrez, and Frand D. Austin; sisters, Debra D. Pruitt and Donna J. Peggins; 10 grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Viewing will be held on Friday October 2, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley.
Services will be held Saturday October 3, at 10 a.m. at the Calipatria High School Gym, 601 West Main St., Calipatria, California with a Luncheon following at the High School Auditorium.

Loren and I grew up together. His Grandmother babysat us when we were 2-4 years old. We attended grammar and high school together. Though I rarely saw Loren anymore, it was always as if we had just spent the day together. I will miss him. I pray for the family to find peace after Loren's passing, and know that he was well regarded by all who had the good fortune to know him. God speed Loren.

You were a great Uncle to Me. I will always remember when you said that Uncle Tag worked at the circus because after that I wanted his autograph really bad.

A man who always had a smile, loved to tease a person. A man who many loved & will miss. As spending a LOT of time at Glady's home, he was like a big brother. He will be missed! May the family find comfort in knowing he is now with Gladys & his beloved Nanny. My condolences to the whole family.

What a sad day for IID. Loren was one of a kinda type of guy - always willing to listen and always took care of his guys. He was always smiling no matter what the situation was and we know he is doing the same in heaven. We will miss him tremendously, especially at our linemen rodeos. The rodeos were one of his passions and he took great pride in putting these together.

Loren was a senior when I was a freshman, and never pulled any stunts on me. He was a genuinely nice man who helped me learn how to live in that environment, even though I was anything but a jock. I have often thought about him, ad I am so sad that he is no longer in this world, although heaven has definitely upped the ante. My love and sympathy to his family. Tom Barrington

A friend that I knew in high school, and also worked with at the IID has gone to be with the Lord. Always quick with that smile, but also wanting to play the joke thing, he was trully a good man, and as i am sure he was as a father. I am sorry to have lost a good friend, but I know I will see him again, my thoughts and prayers to the family.

To Loren's Family, the loss is not only that of your own but, a great loss to those who got to share a great deal of time and memories with such a wonderful person while we still had him around such as I did.
Although we were not related, we bonded like brothers and had a chance to grow "old" together. The fun memories will always remain true to heart and just wish we had more time with "Lorenzo, Lorenzo!!!"
Loren will be terribly missed, but will live on through our thoughts and prayers. My heart goes out to the family (wife/kids) and express my condolences to you!
Lorenzo, we will meet again.
