MARCUS JAY "SHAPPY" SHAPIRO

1967 - 2021

Marcus was born September 2, 1967, in North Hollywood California, and laid to rest in the town he grew up in, Brawley, California on Sunday, May 23, 2021, at the age of 53 from Stage 4 Melanoma cancer. He was diagnosed in October 2020. Unfortunately, the treatment was not successful. Marc was a fighter his whole life, but this was a battle too big for him. Marc attended school at Wilbur Elementary in Tarzana, Witter in Brawley, Jr. high at Sacred Heart, and high school at Brawley Union High. He furthered his love of learning at Mesa Jr. College in San Diego, and Long beach state where he received his degree in Liberal studies. Marc was a teacher for many years in San Diego, Brawley, and Calexico. He also worked for Max Preps as a sports broadcaster, sold Aflac life insurance, and helped out his nephew Josh at his delivery service Delivery.com Marc was an avid sports fan, surfer, and snowboarder. He loved his Chargers, Padres, and Clippers. He dedicated much of his time attending Wildcats sporting events and broadcasting on his Facebook sports page where he had almost 3000 followers. He was a huge fan of heavy metal music and likes to dabble in playing the guitar and singing. He was a member of a band in high school and loved attending concerts. Marc had a special love for his family and friends. He treated his nieces and nephews as his own. He was known for his intelligence, he could tell you any stat to all sports team event, anything in history from his age of 3. Marc was preceded in death by his father, Alan Shapiro in 1980 at 49; his mother, Linda Shapiro 1992 age of 53; his nephew, Jeffrey Thornton in 1998 age of 14; niece, Danielle Thornton this past December at the age of 38 and brother-in-law, Chris Thornton in 1990 at the age of 27. Marc is survived by his sisters, Cathy Shapiro whom he lived with and Lori Maness (Billy); nephew and best friend, Josh Maness (Jessica); nephew, William Maness; great nieces, Gabrielle Herrera, Penelope and Lauren Maness. Memorial services will be held at Frye Chapel in Brawley on June 9th at 9 a.m. graveside services will follow at at Riverview Cemetery at 11 a.m. followed by a lunch reception at Brownie's Diner 990 Main St. Brawley. https://gofundme.com/f/marc-shapiro-funeral-expenses
