MARY KLINE Obituary

Mary Ann Kline passed away of natural causes in her home in El Centro CA. on April 25, 2021. She was born June 22, 1929 in Rockwell City Iowa to Lois McCrady and Jesse Pearl Carmean. She was the youngest of 3 children. Mary Ann grew up on a farm in Lake City IA. Following high school she graduated from Iowa State University, Cornell University and finally University of Redlands where she completed her Masters. Mary Ann traveled west to El Centro CA. with relatives after teaching for 2 years in Iowa. She was hired by Central Union H.S. in 1953. In 1954 she met Douglas (Ted) Kline on a blind date. 5 months later, they were married. It was a love that lasted until the day she passed. Their family was complete with the birth of their 3 children and designing and building the home of their dreams. Mary Ann taught Home Economics at CUHS from 1953-1990. She was a teacher advisor, Head of Dept, FHA advisor, cheerleading, gymnastics and swim coach. She started the 1st-ever Nursery School at CUHS in the late 60s. This kept her young children and children of her peers close as the adults continued their teaching careers. We have always been told her very favorite class at CUHS was Bachelor Survival. After 37 years, Mary Ann retired to spend more time with her growing family and her other passions which included sewing, cooking, woodworking, painting, baking themed birthday cakes and beautiful wedding cakes. She was able to devote more time to the clubs and organizations she was a member of: PEO, DOVES, DAR and her church. She loved her friends and neighbors dearly so had more time for them also. Mary Ann was an avid fan of whatever her family was involved in. She never missed a childs or grandchilds event. She saw her last football game at Boise State at age 90. Many teammates developed special bonds with and came to know the Klines as Grandma and Grandpa since they were always there. Mary Ann was predeceased by her parents, siblings, husband, cousins, and in-laws. She is survived by daughters; Kathy Kline Burk (Michael) and Barbara Howington (Scott); her son, Douglas Kline, Jr. (Carol); grandchildren, Ashton and Aaron Howington, Karlee (fiance Cole Pfister), Dougie, and Casey Kline, Justin (Andrea), Amber, and Christopher (Emily) Burk and great-granddaughter, Aviana Burk. The family would like to give special thanks to Santanter Harper and Amelia Gonzales for the loving care they gave our mom. Kianah Alvarez- our mom treasured your visits and your help in her kitchen baking cookies. Thank you to our wonderful friends and neighbors for helping us through this difficult time. There will be a memorial service Friday, May 14, 2021 at the Valley Christian Church in Imperial 11am. Masks and social distancing will be required. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her honor to Imperial Valley Humane Society or the Valley Christian Church.

Kathy, Barbie and Doug,
What a wonderful legacy your mom leaves behind. She was an excellent teacher, master teacher and mentor. She inspired me to pursue a career in home economics. Not only did I have her as teacher, but I was fortunate to have her as my master teacher. Her energy and talents were boundless. She always made me feel special whenever I would see her around town throughtout the last forty-five years. I know in conversations with her that she was so proud of all of you and your accomplishments. I must say, Impetial County is a better place because of her. The best.

Mrs. Kline was my instructor at CUHS, as well as my boss at Head Start. Her optimism and kindness still influence me to this day. Even though I haven’t seen her since 1972 she still carries a special place in my heart.

Mrs. Kline made a wonderful difference in my life as a teenager. She encouraged me in my interest of Child Development and employed me on my first job at the preschool she started at CUHS. It chartered the path for me in my education and career to become a preschool teacher, Director and eventually owner of my own preschool over a span of 50 yrs. On a personal note, she made our beautiful wedding cake 45 yrs ago. She was such a treasure and I’m so happy that I was able to see her again less than 10 yrs ago when I was visiting my mom in the valley. Prayers to all of her family in the days ahead. She will be greatly missed.
