ROBERTO RUBIO

On November 10, 2024, our dearest Robert went peacefully into the arms of our Jesus and of our blessed mother. He was born on May 5, 1938, to Ramon Sr. and Margarita Rubio in his hometown of Brawley. He was known for being a most blessed saxophone musician performing since the age of 14. He later joined the National Guard and served in the Air Force from 1959-1967, where he specialized as jet engine mechanic and he became a pilot. In 1962, he wanted to be sent to the Vietnam War to fight but instead was sent to Leon AB in France. He was ever known for his "fearlessness" but speaking of wars here as a civilian, he joined one of Political Civil Rights & Justice and joined numerous protests for the good of humanity. In the save lives under the leaderships of John Hunter and Enrique Morones, his wife and numerous volunteers from everywhere joined my husband. Robert going to the deserts in the most horrendous hot weather, putting out water to help with the death toll of those crossing the border. On one occasion with Robert driving, with his wife and 2 Englishmen reporters passengers, they got stopped by a Border Patrol agent closely pointing his rifle to them as to discharge it when, with our arms up they convinced him that they weren't the bad guys. Robert was a general contractor building homes or would be performing with his brass. All types of music he was in various bands throughout the Valley and Rockenroll (James Brown) style in Mexicali played in various Catholic Church choirs. He graduated from the IVC Nursing Program but had no interest to continue in it. Later, he was elected president of the local Mexican American Political Association. He also belonged to the local Democratic Committee. Those times per his love for France. He again went there by himself and was later convinced to take his wife there which became impossible with her dear two brothers to care for.

He is survived by his wife, Graciela Christina Rubio; son, Robert Rubio (Vony); daughters, Yvonne Rubio, Catherine P. McGrath (Philip); grandchilden, Christina Mae, Veronique McGrath, Kevyn, BreAnn Garcia, Trevor, Rene Rubio; great-grandchildren, Elliana McGrath, Rosemary, LoreLei, Lucas; brothers, Rogelio (Rachel) Rubio, Ramon "Hoppy" Rubio; brother-in-laws, Tommy G. Meza (Gloria), Dr. George Jesus Meza; niece, Rebecca Alviso; numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces. He and his wife had many doggy furries who they raised. Survived by his cats, Penelope, Oliver, Lexy, Blacky and 12 others. He was preceded in death by his sons, Rene Rubio and Ray "Squeegie" Rubio.

Viewing will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at 9 a.m. at Hems Brothers Mortuary in El Centro. With a Rosary at 9:30 a.m. Mass will commence at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in El Centro. Burial will follow at Evergreens Cemetery. Reception after at American Legion in El Centro.
