ROGER HOLLINGSWORTH Obituary

ROGER E. HOLLINGSWORTH

Oct. 24, 1948 – Jan. 21, 2025

Roger E. Hollingsworth was born in El Centro, California on October 24, 1948, to loving parents Roger and Nawassa Hollingsworth. He attended grammar school at Harding Elementary School, followed by junior high at Wilson and then went on to graduate from Central Union High School in June of 1966.

Roger started working at a young age, bagging groceries at New Star Market #2 in El Centro, CA. He also worked guarding watermelon fields in the county and then for Douthitt Steel.

In 1968, Roger was drafted into the United States Army. After boot camp and AIT, he received his orders to deploy to Vietnam, where he served for 9 months as a cook.

When he returned from serving his country in Vietnam, Roger proudly became a Sheriff's deputy for the Imperial County Sheriff's Office. He served his community in law enforcement for over 21 years and eventually retired, making many friends along the way.

Roger was a man about town, and you could always find him at Farmer Boys with the breakfast club boys, lunch with the Figueroa brothers and in the afternoons you could find him at McElvany's office conversing and sometimes taking a quick nap. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 25 El Centro, where he purchased his Lotto tickets, drank his Dr. Pepper, and snacked on corn nuts.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Nawassa Hollingsworth, and stephfather, James "Jim" Schofield, and left behind a loving sister, Marsha Clark of Upland, CA.

There will be a celebration of life on February 23, 2025, at the Eagles Lodge, 661 W. State St., El Centro, CA 92243 from 1 to 4 p.m. Roger will be missed by all. Your friend "Bird"

Memories and Condolences
for ROGER HOLLINGSWORTH

Not sure what to say?

Chaplain Bill

June 24, 2025

To the family and friends og Roger, please accept the condolences of the Troopers of the 11th Armored Cavalry's veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia. Nick was a dedicated and courageous warrior, one of us, one of our own. He served courageously with the Legendary Blackhorse Regiment. Roger will be remembered as an honorable trooper whose very presence brought comfort and support to his fellow troopers. He will be included on the Honor Role of our combat veterans as his service highlighted his bravery and valor and was guided with the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. As grateful Americans we should all pause and salute a man who was willing to put his life on the line for his country. As our burial liturgy states: " ... his life has not ended, merely changed ..." and as we were together then in Vietnam, we will be together again in the life hereafter, warmly embraced in the arms of our Heavenly Father. Chaplain Bill, 11th ACVVC (Vietnam 71-72)

So sorry to learn of Roger's passing. We were friends for as far back as I can remember, as his Aunt Bonnie was very close to our family. He was a sweetheart of a guy, and we'll miss him.

Roger would text me every friday to meet him at the Legion for our lotto tickets. His last text was that he had a problem and wouldn't make it. I never saw him again but sometimes I still expect to see his truck parked at the curb when I pull up. RIP Roger.

Roger you will definitely be missed. Even after retirement Roger seem to know everything that was going on at the Sheriff's Office. A great source of S.O. history. Never a bad word about anyone and a great friend. Gonna miss your kindness and that super long mustache.

Roger was a loyal friend. I attended school with Roger and have lots of good memories especially of Roger working at New Star in his early years. He always had a story or two to tell as he carried groceries to your car. Whenever we invited Roger to visit us in San Diego he refused saying he was a "flat lander". I was drawn closer to Roger later in life as he was such a good friend to Gregg. Roger stayed connected and would reach out to people. We were blessed to have him in our lives. Sending love and condolences to Marsha.
