RUBEN AMADOR GASTELUM
1918 - 2012
In the early hours of December 31, 2012, the angels came down and took Ruben, 94, to be reunited with the love of his life, wife Mary, sons Ruben Jr. and Mark, and daughter Mary Ellen Hagerman.
Ruben died peacefully in his sleep with his loving daughter Sylvia and son-in-law Steve Parker at his bedside. Ruben was born in Santa Rosalia, Baja California. By the age of 3, he and his parents moved to Heber, CA, where he attended grade school and then went on to Central Union High School in El Centro, CA. Ruben owned and operated his own business in the Imperial Valley for many years. Upon retirement he moved to Montclair, CA to be near his daughters. He is survived by daughters, Sylvia Parker, Montclair, CA, and Vera Shirley, Jacumba, CA, twelve grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren.
The family wishes to give heart-felt thanks to VNA Hospice of Clairemont, CA for their exceptional care to our loved one and to his family.
Graveside services are planned for January 8, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, 201 East Gillett St., in El Centro, CA.

My thoughts and go out to you Vera and Sylvia for the loss of your father. You have suffered so many losses. I have fond memories of the Gastelums from my teenage years at Central and living across the street from Geneve. Your dad was so proud of you as I recall from Vera's wedding reception at your house. Also was privileged to become acquainted with Mark in later years when we gave him rides to church in Pomona. Vera was one of the first people to befriend me as a new student at Central. May God Bless you all.

To me, as a young man, Ruben was an icon of high morality, role model, unselfish neighbor. At the time, my wife and I lived with my mother-in-law across the street from Ruben and Mary. Ruben was a hard worker and Mary seemed to rule the family with an iron will. And that wasn't easy with Ruben, Jr., and the girls. Ruben, Jr., was a giant of a man, even as a teenager. But Mary would threaten him with dire bodily harm unless he kept his ducks in a row. And he mostly obeyed. Ruben volunteered to help me cut down an eucalyptus tree that he could see from across the street was a bigger job than I could handle. But it was the love and caring that emanated from both of them that has stayed with me through the years. All of these events took place in the late 50's and early 60's. I loved Ruben and Mary and am saddened at their loss.

My condolences to the Gastelum family. I remember how both Rubens were hard working men doing their tractor work for many years. Vera, my old classmate, my thoughts are with you.
