RUTH SANTILLAN Obituary

Ruth passed away peacefully in Holtville, CA, on October 23, 2023, and was born to eternal life. She was a wonderful, kind, loving, and caring daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend. Ruth was born in Mexicali, MX on August 27, 1948. She migrated to the United States and settled in Calexico, CA with her parents and siblings in 1960. She graduated from Calexico High School in 1970 after taking breaks from school to migrate seasonally with her family to work in agriculture fields in Central California. She then continued her education and attended Imperial Valley College, and earned several training certifications.
Ruth was a very hard and committed worker who held several jobs, in particular with service providers for children and youth. Early in her adult life, Ruth worked as a social work assistant for the Regional Center for the Developmentally Disabled, as a job counselor for Campesinos Unidos, and as a handicap service coordinator for the E.O.C. Head Start Project. Ruth settled in working as a group supervisor at Imperial County Juvenile Hall and Los Ninos Receiving Home for several years before entering her final career as a community liaison for Calexico Unified School District and Imperial School District, where she retired in 2008.
Ruth was preceded in death by her son, Rene; daughter, Melisa; parents, Refugio and Estanislao Mares; and siblings, Vicente, Abelardo, Margarita, and Elena Ysaguirre-Mares.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Daniel O. Santillan; son, Sergio (Angie) Santillan; stepchildren, Daniel Jr., Juan Carlos, and Rachel Santillan; grandchildren, Alyssa Arguelles, Nate Smith Jr. and Adela Santillan.
Funeral services will begin with visitation on November 8, 2023, at 6 p.m. at Frye Chapel & Mortuary in Imperial, CA. Mass will take place on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Calexico, CA.
Ruth will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of kindness, love, and devotion will forever be cherished.

Ruth worked for EOC Head Start as a Health/Disability Coordinator. She was very empathetic and loved to interact with the children and their parents. She was an amazing person and friend. My deepest condolences to the Santillan and Mares Families.

I have fond memories of Cuquita and all the Mares family, our longtime neighbors in Calexico. She was a kind and gentle soul-may God have welcomed her into Heaven with open arms...my condolences to her family and friends.
