TONY TIRADO Obituary

TONY TIRADO

Jan. 24, 1933 – Aug. 2, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Tony Tirado, a lifelong resident and beloved figure of Calexico, who left us peacefully on August 2, 2024, at the age of 91. Born and raised in Calexico to immigrant parents from Sinaloa, Mexico, Tony's life was a testament to dedication, service, and love for his family and community.

Tony, a proud Bulldog, attended local schools in Calexico. Tony was predeceased by his beloved wife, Alicia, with whom he shared 46 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they raised five sons, instilling in them the values of hard work, kindness, and loyalty.

Tony dedicated his professional life to the United States Postal Service, where he served diligently for 36 years. His commitment to his country extended to the National Guard, where he served honorably for 42 years. His sense of duty also led him to volunteer as a firefighter for 13 years, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of his community.

Tony's love for Calexico was evident in his relentless efforts to improve and serve his city. He held numerous significant roles, including serving on the Calexico Unified School District Board of Trustees (1976-1980), Calexico City Council (1980-1994), and Imperial County Board of Supervisors (1999-2003). His influence extended through his work with the League of California Cities, Imperial Valley Association of Governments, Imperial Valley Local Transportation Board, Southern California Association of Governments, Southern California Joint Powers Association, Border Trade Alliance, Imperial County Democratic Central Committee, and California's 45th District Agricultural Association Board of Directors (Fair Board).

In addition to his extensive civic involvement, Tony was a dedicated member and trustee of the Calexico Elks Lodge #1382. Since 1956, he was actively involved in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Calexico, where he served on multiple committees, reflecting his deep faith and commitment to his community. Tony also treasured his time with the Calexico Baja Runners, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of his many close friends.

Those who knew Tony will remember him not just for his public service but for his personal warmth. He was a friend to many, always ready with a kind word, a helping hand, or a listening ear. His laughter, kindness, and genuine concern for others made him a beloved figure throughout the community.

Tony cherished family gatherings, which were core to his joy. Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Magdalena Tirado; wife, Alicia; son, Michael; sister, Rebeca Maynez; and brothers, Joe and Hector Tirado. Tony is survived by his sisters, Matilde Leyva, Lily Leal, and Ofelia Rivas; sisters-in-law, Eva Tirado and Susie Tirado; sons, Tony (Yolanda), Danny (Gaby), David (Veronica), Steven (Maria); and daughter-in-law, Veronica Tirado; grandchildren, Daniela (Ernesto) Valenzuela, Dr. Danny Tirado (Angela), Michael Anthony, Alyssa, Marshal, Shaina, Morgan, Zoe, and Eva Madaline; great-grandchildren, Noah, Luca, and Alice; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of friends and extended family.

Viewing will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at 9 a.m. with rosary to follow at 10 a.m. and mass at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Calexico. Burial will immediately follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Calexico. After the conclusion of the interment service, a lunch reception will take place at the Carmen Durazo Cultural Arts Center located in the old Hotel De Anza at 421 Heffernan Avenue in Calexico. The family requests that donations be made to the Calexico Baja Runners, reflecting Tony's lifelong dedication to giving back.

Tony Tirado's enduring legacy of service, love, and community spirit will continue to inspire and guide Calexico for generations to come. May he rest in peace.

Dear David and the Tirado Family,
I am sad at the loss of your Dad. He was a wonderful man, a great father, and a tremendous community leader. He worked awfully hard his whole life to make our cities and County stronger and safer. While it was always good to meet with him from my work assignments, it was always a pleasure and fun to meet with him off-duty in a social environment.
