Carman Wilkins Obituary
Memorial services for Mr. Carman Almus Wilkins, Jr., age 79, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Highland Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, with Pastor Lonnie Black officiating. Lawrence-Sorensen Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Wilkins died Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
He was born in Jackson, TN to the late Carman Almus Wilkins, Sr. and Jo Ann Norville Wilkins. He graduated high school from Columbia Military Academy and attended the University of Mississippi "Ole Miss" and Union University. Mr. Wilkins was a veteran of the U. S. Army with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served as an apprentice at the GM&O Railroad, where he received The Outstanding Apprenticeship Certificate. He retired from Ormet, formerly Conalco, with 35 years of service, was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, a member of The Sons of the Confederacy and the American Legion Post #90. Mr. Wilkins was a member of North Jackson Baptist Church and loved motorcycle riding especially his Piaggio Scooter.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jewel C. Wilkins; his step-mother, Lela Ann Wilkins and a step-son, Graves Lipscomb.
Surviving are his daughter, Valerie Viers and husband Michael of Jackson; his grandchildren, Shane Viers and wife Kaylea of Jackson, and Ross Lipscomb and wife Noelle of Jackson; his great-grandchildren, Kinley Viers, Alexander Viers, Grayson Viers and London Viers, all of Jackson; his sisters-in-law, Teresa Harvey and Pat Collins, and very close friends, Jay Welcher of Medon, and Bobby and Lounette Jenkins of Jackson.
Also surviving are a step-daughter, Debra Anderson and husband, Mark of Lexington; a step-son, Jonathan Lipscomb of Jackson and a step-granddaughter, Ginny Ivy and husband Cory, and their daughters of Lexington.
Friends may visit with the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
