Carl has made a little list for me. Each item, carefully numbered in his unruly hand, tells a story about John Jack Haley. Carl can't speak of Jack and the list without tears but we talk anyway, and slowly memories come.
One year at the Hendersonville, NC air show, there is a biplane ride both men are too cheap to take and both always regret missing. They see choppers there, the same ones Jack piloted in Nam, and Jack speaks at length about their operation and care. Carl is amazed at the physical coordination and strength required to fly them, so much going on at once! He watches combat memories chase each other behind Jack's eyes.
Jack is good at telling stories, and Carl loves them all (so do I for that matter). Funny stories about cargoes of eggs, fate and enemy tanks, and not-so-nice stories that are harder to tell. Jack is a good man. Carl and I know he is sparing us from the worst stories and we appreciate that. Perhaps he spares himself, too. That's just fine.
Jack loves banana splits, and when both men are young they eat them together. Many, many years later I sneak away and buy banana splits for them and the three of us laugh as they eat. Carl and Jack talk about Miami, about military life, about water skiing, about family.
Thank you, Jack Haley, for passing on the wisdom of the ROMEOs (retired old men eating out), for hours and days of exploring, and for planting in Carl a hunger to know the history of his world. Thank you for being kind and patient and wise. We will carry you and your family with us always.
