Lee Jernigan Obituary

Funeral services for Lee Edward Jernigan will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday February 15 2004 at the chapel of Lawrence-Sorensen Funeral Home with Brother C.N. Ricks officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens in Jackson. Mr. Jernigan passed away Thursday February 12 2004 at his home after a long illness. He was born June 6 1932 in Hornsby TN son of the late Leonard Hadley Jernigan and Lora Mae Matlock. Mr. Jernigan retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in 1971. He served during the Korean and Vietnam wars and received several medals during his 21 years of service. Mr. Jernigan has resided in Jackson since his Naval retirement. In 2003 Mr. Jernigan retired from the U.S. Post Office where he was employed for 31 years. He served the American Postal Worker's Union APWU as steward and President of the local Jackson APWU and Vice President of the 383 TN State APWU. He was a member of Oaklawn Baptist Church. He was married on November 24 1955 to Nancy Elizabeth Powell. He leaves his wife of 48 years Nancy E Jernigan of Jackson; 4 children Nancy Lea Jernigan Janet Cupples Glenn Jernigan LaNonda all of Jackson and Donna Costello Vernon of Waverly TN; and 6 grandchildren Christi Cupples Glenn Jernigan II Michelle Jernigan Ray Costello Amber Costello and Zackery Jernigan and exchange student 'grandchild' Anne Lenters; several cousins numerous friends at the U.S. Post Office and a 'host' of Volunteer fans. He was especially fond of his 'new' little friend Clayton Bowers son of Steve and Pam Bowers of Jackson TN. You could always tell when Lee was close by just listen to him to whistle you a tune. He could always be found at a sports event watching his children or grandchildren playing football softball baseball basketball soccer track and field and participating in band competitions. his most enjoyable activity was attending UT Vols football games with his wife and other family members. His favorite saying was 'Yes Dear' which he knew when to use at the most appropriate times especially after a Vols game. When we hear Rocky Top we'll always think of Lee aka Pillsbury Doughboy. On a more serious note he was very much involved in the U.S. Postal Union. He used his knowledge to help those in need of guidance during any procedures needed to assure compliance. He was loved by all who knew him and will be sadly missed. Pallbearers to serve are Jim Skelton Buster Keaton Danny Springer Roy McKnight Johnney Cupples and Glenn Jernigan II. Honorary pallbearers are Jim Paschal Vernon Costello Ray Costello and Zackery Jernigan. Visitation with the family will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
