I apologize for such a late message, but wish to express my sorrow for this notice that I saw today. I was at Dr. Morrés lab in 1989 for several months. The environment he created there and the inspiring person he was to me, produced a very positive and lasting effect on my life.

Dorothy and kids, i'm so sorry to hear of Jim's passing and apologise for this late message. I called the other day for our biannual conversation and when i didn't get him, i feared the worst. I did a search and found this site.

Dr. Morre was a very important person in my life and i would never have had a career in molecular biology without his guidance and an incredible amount of patience he had, putting up with me. I am forever in his debt.

Dear Dorothy
I was stunned to learn of Jim's passing. Please accept my deepest condolences. I always looked forward to seeing both of you at conferences and sharing the warm relationship we seemed to have had. It may not be widely known that our lives advanced in lock step just 1 year apart: birth, marriage, PhD degree, sabbatical, research center, etc. I considered our joint projects to be significant. His life was exemplary, and our interests and attitudes overlapped heavily, especially including his dedication to music and his earnest living of his religious faith. I only wish we had at least one more conversation before Jim's passing. I wish you all the best as life goes on.
With warmest personal regards
Paul

The Purdue University Center for Cancer Research is sorry to learn of the passing of Jim Morré. The Center is deeply indebted to him. Jim was the founding director of the Center for Cancer Research. In the early 1970s Jim envisioned Purdue as a National Cancer Institute designed cancer center and organized a cancer discussion group at Purdue to begin the process of gaining National Cancer Institute recognition. Jim wanted to bring together the best minds at Purdue to study cancers and develop new ways to detect and treat the disease. He accomplished this and more. Jim obtained a planning grant from the National Cancer Institute in 1975 and in 1978, Jim successfully led Purdue in obtaining its first National Cancer Institute designation, which it has held continuously since the first award. Jim served as director from 1978 to 1986. His vision will be missed.

Jim Morré was a great scientist, whose positive impact on the public's health will be widely recognized in the coming years. He and Dorothy Morré discovered an enzyme called ENOX2, instrumental in the cancer process, and suggested important ways that it could be controlled. His loss is a tragedy for his family and also for the broader public that is still largely unaware of the importance of their contribution. I send condolences to the Morré family and to his entire circle, including the employees of MorNuCo.
