James W. Schmidt

James W. "Jim" Schmidt, 71, of Lafayette, passed away at home on Saturday, March 8, 2014. Born July 4, 1942 in Lansing, MI, he was the son of the late William J. and Teresa (Morin) Schmidt. Jim was a graduate of Jackson High School and attended Indiana State Univesity.

His marriage was to Judy Franks on July 8, 1961 in Lebanon, IN, and she survives. Jim was a machinist at Fairfield for 47 years and a member of Fairfield Local # 2317 and the Fairfield Athletic Association. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and a former member of the Corvette Club. He was a Coca Cola fan, Purdue sports fan and an avid NASCAR fan. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sports activities.

Surviving with his wife is his son, James M. Schmidt (wife, Robin L.) of Lafayette and his daughter, Theresa Gellenbeck (husband, Steven) of West Point; his brother, Charles J. Schmidt of Lafayette and four sisters, Violet Schmidt of Illinois, Barbara Walsh of Frankfort, IN, Judith Donoho of Monticello, IN and Patricia Schmidt of Illinois. Also surviving are five grandchildren, James Michael Vincent Schmidt, Matthew Denton Cole Schmidt, Jacob Tyler Steel Schmidt, Cassidy Ann Marie Schmidt and Victoria Suzanne Smith, great-grandson, Wyatt R. Chittick, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Marie Smith and his mother-in-law, Loretta M. Franks.

Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with Rosary at 4:45 p.m., at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church with Rev. Father Clayton Thompson officiating. Burial to follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. Hippensteel Funeral Home is entrusted with care. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Susan M.
