Nannie Rogers Obituary

Nannie Elizabeth "Betty" Haywood Rogers

Greenville

Mrs. Nannie Elizabeth Haywood Rogers, affectionately called "Betty", died Friday January 29, 2016, at St. Francis Hospital, Downtown at the age of 88.

Born in Greenville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Manly Furman Haywood and Martha McIntosh Haywood and the sister of the late Mack Haywood Pazdan and the late Furman Haywood. Known to her family as "Mimi", she is survived by her husband Robert Lee Rogers, her two children, Rae Duke Sobocinski of Greenville, SC and Hagen Haywood Rogers and his wife Satu Rogers also of Greenville, SC and six grandchildren: Chas Duke of Greenville, SC, Haywood and Sterling Duke, both attending Clemson University, Bella and Lexie Sobocinski, and Sylvie Rogers.

Mrs. Rogers graduated from Greenville High School and received a bachelor's degree in Economics from Furman University where her classmates described her as "shiny, industrious, especially backstage, reliable, and fashionable." She was a life-long member of First Baptist Church. Friends in the community that knew her described her as "a beautiful true lady, with a warm, kind, sweet spirit who was a wonderful wife, mom, sister, aunt and friend." She quietly was a strong advocate for orphanages which reflected her deep love for babies and children, those in her own family and extended family, to those she would pass on the street and stop to admire, to those that she never met that were by fate living in orphanages. She was a General Partner in her family's real estate partnership, Haywood-Rogers Properties, which developed family-owned farm land on what is now Haywood Road. She was a member of the Chanticleer Garden Club, parent activities at Christ Church Episcopal School, and the Nine Hole Women's Golf Group at the Greenville Country Club. For the past forty years she lived minutes away from her best friend and sister, the late Mack Pazdan and her family.

A private burial will take place Monday February 1, 2016 at Woodlawn Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m. for family members, followed by a public Celebration Service for family and friends at 2:00 p.m. in the Carpenter Chapel at First Baptist Church, 847 Cleveland Street followed by a public reception honoring our Mimi at 3:00 p.m. at the Poinsett Club located at 807 E. Washington Street.
