Peter Schug Obituary

Peter Everett Schug, 73

Peter (Pete) Schug, age 73, of Lafayette, passed away peacefully at 7:43 p.m. on Thursday, September 13, 2012, at Creasy Springs Health Campus where he had been a patient for the past two weeks. He was born August 25, 1939 in Berne, Indiana to the late Charlotte (Skoronski) Schug and Everett Schug. He married Sharon A. Huser on August 24, 1963 in Berne, IN.

Pete is survived by his wife, Sharon; son, Brad; daughter, Julie Cserep (husband Dan) and grandson Michael Everett all of Lafayette; his sister, Isabella Allen of Portland, Oregon; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Otto F. Schug and his sister, Anna Louise Burns.

Pete graduated from Berne French High School in 1957 as an all star basketball player and still holds the high score record of 42 points in a game. He also graduated from Taylor University and Ball State University where he played basketball and football. He and his wife moved to Lafayette in 1963 where he taught biology and zoology first at Sunnyside Middle School and then at Lafayette Jefferson High School, for a total of 33 years. Pete was the varsity swim coach at Lafayette Jeff for 15 years and contributed to 10 consecutive sectional championships for the men's team. In 1972 Pete was president of the Indiana High School Swim Coach's Association. In 1976 Pete and his wife Sharon started their awards business that is now Schug Awards.com which Sharon continues to own and operate with Pete retiring from the business in 2000. Pete and Sharon enjoyed winters in Florida and he enjoyed fishing and singing Karaoke.

Pete has been a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ where he was an Elder and Deacon and formerly chaired the social events committee. Pete was also a member of the Lafayette Rotary Club.

Pete was lifelong teacher and coach in and out of the classroom and was blessed with his first grandchild, Michael, earlier this year.

The family will receive friends Sunday 1-4 p.m. at Hippensteel Funeral Home with the service to follow at 4 p.m., the Rev. Dr. Ronald W. Wunsch officiating and a close friend, Jim Sharp, speaking. The family suggests memorials may be made to American Heart Association, Lafayette Jefferson High School Athletics, or Immanuel United Church of Christ. Hippensteel Funeral Home entrusted with care. Please accept my sincere sympathy on Coaches passing. I never had him in class but I "had" him many mornings and afternoons in the pool. My box vaults still contain a shirt that reads, "GO FOR PETES SAKE". Without him, I wouldn't be the man I am today.
