Ruth Howe Obituary
Lafayette - Ruth B. (Becker) Howe, age 88, passed away at 6:13 p.m. on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Franciscan Health Lafayette East.
She was the daughter of the late George D. and Edna R. (Himes) Becker, born on December 8, 1929 in Lafayette. Her marriage was to Robert Lloyd "Bob" Howe on March 26, 1952 in Lafayette and he preceded her in death on March 7, 2015.
Ruth was owner and operator of the Southside Cafeteria in Monon, IN for 16 years. She previously was employed at Once Upon A Child for 11 years. She was very involved with her grandchildren's sporting events and loved to cheer them on. Ruth truly enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. She will be deeply missed.
She leaves behind five children; Debra McGonigle of Grand Rapids, MI, Robert Daniel "Dan" (Teresa) Howe of Lafayette, IN, Douglas L. (Sharon) Howe of Lafayette, IN, Doreen S. Williams of Tampa, FL and Donna J. (Rob) Williams of Tampa, FL; ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ruth is preceded in death by five siblings; Ed Becker, Ray Becker, Harold Becker, Helen Faustich and Clara Heine; grandson, Jonathon McGonigle.
Friends may visit on Saturday, February 10, 2018 from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. prior to the Funeral Service beginning at 2:00 p.m. with Rob Williams officiating at Hippensteel Funeral Home. In lieu of usual remembrances, direct memorial contributions to Habitat for Humanity (420 South 1st Street, Lafayette, IN). I just heard, yesterday, of Ruth's passing. I gasped aloud at the news Ruth was so full of life and spunk, even though she was 88 years young. Ruth was the first friend I met, last April, when my mother joined her in residence at The Springs. As it turns out, Ruth had known my parents, in particular my father. Ruth, immediately, took a special interest in my mother and helped me stay informed as to what was happening with her, when I was away. Ruth and I had many great conversations, usually over lunch. She talked about the restaurant days, her husband's railroad work, and the days she spent with my dad while working for Becker Auto Sales. We sat and visited at the Neat Nails table recently, having no idea that would be our last conversation. Her daughter-in-law, Theresa, also became my fast friend. She was my lifeline at The Springs during those critical first weeks and months there. Over time, Ruth and I also discovered that I had gone to school with her daughter, Debbie. I had looked forward to re-connecting with Debbie at one of her visits, but that hadn't happened yet. I am very sad about the loss of Ruth, and I am sorry to have to miss the funeral due to being out of town today. I extend my sincere condolences to Theresa, to Debbie, and to all of Ruth's Loved Ones! You all will be in my prayers, today and in the coming months. Rest In Peace dear Ruth! We look forward to seeing you again in my Father's House there are many mansions, I hope yours is next to mine!
