WEST JEFFERSON-Josephine "Jo" Stringer, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on march 20, 2017 in ashe county.
She was born on July 23, 1929 in Ashe County to the late Joseph Clark "JC" Brown and Marjorie "Margie" Williams Brown.
Jo was a talented beautician/hairdresser for over 60 years, having been the owner/operator of Jo's Beauty Salon in West Jefferson until her retirement for health reasons in April of 2008. She was devoted to her family and friends, always sharing her wonderful pecan tarts with everyone she knew. She was an extremely good cook, cooking for her family and friends on Thursday nights for many, many years, always enjoying the company they provided. She also had a true love for fishing, gardening, canning vegetables, crocheting dish cloths, making quilts & afghans, playing cards, traveling, cracking pecans, and making those wonderful pecan tarts and rhubarb pies. She had a "green thumb" when it came to gardening, always making certain to plant enough to share with others.
Jo had a strong and devoted love of god and was a faithful member of Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian church in West Jefferson, where she was a long-time member of the church choir and women of the church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, J.C. "Pappy" and Margie Brown; husband, Harold "Bud" Stringer; sister, Evelyn Brown Shoemaker Reel; infant sister, Martha Brown; in-laws, Jimmy Allen; Sharpe Shoemaker; Harry Reel; Hoyle Stringer and wife, Ruth; June Stringer Woodruff Reeves and husbands, John Woodruff and Wayne Reeves; and Iva Jean Stringer Bare.
Jo is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Deborah Epperson Stringer of Galax, Va and Mt Airy, NC; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynne and Sidney Isenhour of Taylorsville, NC; grandchildren Elizabeth Stringer, and Mary S. Plant & husband Jon, of Galax, Va; Andy Isenhour of Taylorsville, NC; Amanda I. Queen and husband William, of Taylorsville, NC; step-grandchildren Brian Sizer and wife Annette, of Galax, Va; Virginia S. Brown and husband Lee of Charlotte, NC; Steven Sizer of Los Angeles, California,; great-grandchildren Molly Plant and Tucker Queen; step-great-grandchildren Michael and Aiden Sizer, Micah, Rayah, and Levi Brown, & Emma and Adyson Queen. She is also survived by her sister, Mary B. Allen of West Jefferson, a brother-in-law, Earnest Bare of China Grove, NC, and a number of neices, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family will receive friends on March 25, 2017, at Mt Jefferson Presbyterian Church, West Jefferson, NC, from noon to 2 p.m
A memorial service will be held immediately following visitation on March 25, 2017 at 2 pm.

Jefferson Presbyterian Church, PO Box 782, West Jefferson, NC 28694 or your local humane society, PO BOX 1776, West Jefferson, NC 28694 or animal shelter. Flowers appreciated, as well.
