MATTOON - Carol Ann Hopkins, age 83, of Mattoon, IL, passed away at 2:05 PM, Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
A funeral service in her honor will be held at 12:00 PM, Monday, June 10, 2024, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL, 61938. Pastor Dennis Strawn will officiate. A committal service will immediately follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon, IL. The visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the funeral home.
Carol was born on December 2, 1940, in Mattoon, IL, to the late Gilbert J. and Maude M. (Swayze) Michaels. She married Kim E. Hopkins on May 7, 1960, in Dresden, TN; he preceded her in death on October 11, 2020.
She is survived by one brother, Robert Michaels and wife Diana of Mattoon, IL; one sister, Sharon Childress of Mattoon, IL; five nephews and nieces: Curt McKibben and wife Jane of Mattoon, IL, Faye Hopkins of Watseka, IL, Laura (Michaels) Gesell and husband Mark of Mattoon, IL, Lisa (Michaels) Yates and husband John of St. Louis, MO, Eric Michaels of Mattoon, IL; and many close friends. She was preceded in death by one son, James A. Hopkins; and niece, Cara Childress.
Mrs. Hopkins attended the First Baptist Church of Mattoon, IL. A 1959 graduate of Mattoon High School, she enjoyed serving on class committees. She was a student at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL, for two years and was employed by the Mattoon Community Unit School District 2 as a teachers aid for many years. She was a past member of the Mattoon and Charleston Golf and Country Clubs, Mattoon Moose Lodge, and the Mattoon Eagles Club.
Carol lived an active life full of adventure and fun. She was very athletic and took pleasure in playing tennis, bowling, golfing, camping, and traveling. She and her late husband, Kim, enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida with her sister, Sharon. She loved dancing and participated in all high school dance events. She especially enjoyed spending time with friends, and she cherished every moment with her nieces, Lisa Yates and Laura Gesell.
Full of humor, Carol was fun to be around. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

I have known Carol since August of 1994. I loved her friendship, her laugh, and how she always put a smile on my and everyone else's face. We didn't talk or text often but we always had our memories to share and the new things in our lives that were happening. Carol was a very special friend.
