John Shain Obituary

SULLIVAN -- John E. Shain, 71, of rural Sullivan (Coles Station) passed away 3:20 a.m. Thursday, September 14, 2006 in his home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan; with Pastor Norma "Tootie" Langley officiating. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, Sullivan. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. John was born January 29, 1935 in Allenville the son of Henry Walter and Arvilla Fern (Wickiser) Shain. Mr. Shain was retired as a self-employed building contractor. He had previously been a superintendent for the electrical department for the City of Sullivan. John was a 30 year member of the Sullivan Volunteer Fire Department. In his younger years, he assisted at coaching the Sullivan Girl's Softball team. He was a member of the 1st Church of God of Sullivan. John also received the "Fan of the Year" from the Lady Redskins 1989-1990. He enjoyed woodworking, landscaping, and making beautiful wooden items for his family. His most enjoyment was spending time with his family. John married Reba C. Arterburn on November 2, 1953 in Celina, TN. Surviving are his wife, Reba of rural Sullivan; daughter, Marsha Thompson and husband Joe, son Brian Shain and his wife Vickey, all of Sullivan; brothers, Earl Leroy (Ada) Shain of Wichita, Kansas, Charles (Betty) Shain, of Mattoon, Ronald (Lvonne) Shain of Mesa, AZ, Kenneth (Donna) Cole of Mesa, AZ, James (Dorothy) Shain of Centralia, Ray (Earletta ) Shain of Sullivan; sisters, Betty (Birdie) Turnbow of Grove Hill, AL, Barbara (Tom) Moon of Sullivan, Kay (Leroy) Kearney of Lovington and sister-in- law Sue Shain of Bethany; grandsons John W. Booker (fiancé Hilary Wheeler) of Savannah, GA, Troy Shain of Sullivan, Kurtis Thompson (Mariko) of Lebanon, OH; granddaughters Kendra Shain of Sullivan, Jessica (Don) Husted of Wauconda, IL, Lexie Gifford of Sullivan, great-grandchildren Taylor Booker of Sullivan, Conner and Lauren Husted of Wauconda, Skylar and Bryte Thompson of Lebanon, OH and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Shirley Turnbow and brother Russell Shain.
