John Yantis Obituary

SHELBYVILLE -- John Aubrey Yantis, 77, of Shelbyville, died at 5:50 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004 at the Shelby Manor in Shelbyville. He was born April 11, 1927 in Shelbyville, the son of Judge A. L. and Josephine Frawley Yantis. He was educated in Shelbyville public schools, graduating from high school in 1945. He served in the U. S. Navy in 1945-1946 as a combat air crewman. Thereafter, he entered the University of Colorado, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi, graduating with a B.S. in 1950. Mr. Yantis received his legal education at the University of Colorado, College of Law, where he was a member of Phi Delta Phi, and received his J.D. in 1952. Mr. Yantis married Dorothy MacNiall Tomlinson on June 16, 1950 in Ardmore, OK. She died November 9, 1999. He is survived by two daughters, Peggy Yantis Purdue of Seminole, FL and Liz Schafer of Mattoon; one son, Bob Yantis of Elmondorff, TX: seven grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one brother, two sisters and one grandson. He will be remembered for his intellect, paitience Civic contributions, his love of family and devotion to duty as well as being an avid sailor and accomplished pianist. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Burial in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. Memorial contributions may be donated to the Yantis Scholarship at Lakeland College, Boy Scout Troop 51, Humane Society or Donor's Choice. I was so sorry to hear of your father's death. He was a kind and gentle soul. I have great memories of drifting off to sleep on summer evenings listening to him playing the piano.
