Raymond was born July 8, 1934, in Shumway, Ill., to Tony and Bessie (Keller) Vonderheide. Ray grew up in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Shumway and remained devoted to his faith throughout his life. After serving in the United States Army at Fort Lee, Va., he met Lois Jean (Bording) Lindemann in Jacksonville, Ill. They were married on February 1, 1964. Ray lovingly embraced Lois's three children, Roxanne, Cliff, and Mike, as his own, and together they built a life of faith and family.
Soon after, they moved to Mattoon, where Ray began a 30-year career with Morton Buildings, retiring as manager of the Mattoon office. As top salesman, he and Lois enjoyed many memorable trips, some of which included Europe, Hawaii, South America, and the Caribbean. Following retirement, they spent ten years in Mission, Texas, where Ray discovered a love for stained glass and together, they made lasting friendships. They later returned to Mattoon to be near family.
Ray was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Mattoon and a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. He was known for his faith, love of conversation, and gift for storytelling, which brought him joy. This summer he celebrated his 91st birthday and spent time at family gatherings with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating memories his family will always treasure.
Ray is survived by his loving family: daughter, Roxanne (Larry) Lilly of Mattoon; sons, Cliff (Desra) Lindemann of Bluford, Ill. and Mike (Liz) Lindemann of Champaign, Ill.; grandchildren, Angie (Kent) Niebrugge, Brandon (Lydia) Lindemann, Kristin (Nick) Daniels, DeAirdra Lindemann Dagg, Briena (Mark) McKay, Laura Lindemann, Allison Lindemann, Rachel Lindemann and Alex Lilly; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. He is also survived by sisters, Elaine Hartke and Barbara Hartke; sister-in-law, Dorothy Bording; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; his parents; sister, Joan Clancy; brothers, Wayne Vonderheide and Eugene "Bud" Vonderheide; brothers-in-law, Robert Clancy, Jim Hartke and Gordon Hartke; and sisters-in-law, Marlene Vonderheide and Mary Vonderheide.
