Avon McCamey Obituary

Avon Neal McCamey, 81, passed away Friday, July 4, 2025 at Walnut Ridge Nursing and Rehab Center. Avon was born on August 9, 1943, the son of the late George A. McCamey and Etta Viola Shocklee McCamey in the Ingram community. Avon graduated from Maynard High School in 1961 and spent most of his life as a Tool and Die Maker for TRW Cinch in Pocahontas, where he held patents on electronic parts of his own design. Avon married Leveda Redus McCamey, on her 18th birthday, November 8, 1963, when they eloped to Cecil Wilson's house in Pocahontas. The two met while chopping cotton. Avon and Leveda were married for almost 54 years when Leveda passed away in August of 2017. Together, they raised two daughters on the family cattle farm in the hills of Randolph County between Ingram and Warm Springs, AR. Avon is survived by his two daughters, Shelia (Tracy) Ingram of Maynard and Sherry (Chris) Blevins of Jonesboro. Avon is also survived by his grandchildren: Gary (Stormie) Ingram; Jessica (Matthew) Clark; Chasity (Brandon) McPherson; Charity (Keith) Ingram Harston; Jared (Samantha) Griffin; Jessica Blevins; Chase Blevins; and Teara Widner. Avon also had nine great-grandchildren: Landon, Chloe, and Brentlee McPherson; Sydney and Tucker Clark; Blair, Oliver & Bellamy Ingram, and Benjimen Harston. Avon was a lifelong musician, having learned to play the guitar at the age of 13. Avon never needed to learn to read sheet music. He could play any song he heard by ear. For many years in the 1970s, he played and sang at the Music Center Jamboree in East Pocahontas. Avon raised cattle, horses, and hunting dogs on the family farm and loved to coon hunt. He served as announcer for Warm Spring Saddle Club and was an avid horseman. Avon attended Palestine Church of Christ as a boy and returned as an adult to serve for many years on the cemetery committee. All services will be held in the chapel of McNabb Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 6, 2025 from 3-5 PM in the chapel of McNabb Funeral Home. Funeral services will be led by Avon's nephew, Terry Miller on Monday, July 7, 2024 at 10 AM. Burial will follow in Palestine Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Mr. McCamey's grandsons: Gary Ingram, Jared Griffin, Matt Clark, Chase Blevins, Landon, and Brandon McPherson.
