JONESBORO - David Charles Weathers, 81, of rural Jonesboro, passed from this life Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro.
Charles was born in Jonesboro and lived all of his life in the Brookland area. He was a 1961 graduate of Brookland High School and attended Arkansas State University. He began a career with Southwestern Bell Telephone in 1964, serving as a lineman.
Charles later worked as a cable splicer and a central office switchman, and he retired in 1998 as central office manager with 34 years of service.
Charles was a longtime member of Brookland Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the building committee. He had been a member of Nettleton Baptist Church for 20 years where he was active with George Williamson's Sunday school class.
Charles was a past member of the Brookland School Board and served six years in the Arkansas National Guard.
Charles enjoyed gardening, woodworking, raising cattle, hunting and meeting with his coffee-shop buddies at more than one coffee shop, where he met old friends and often made new friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Clella Burton Weathers.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Claudia Hodges Weathers, married April 2, 1966, of the home; two daughters and their husbands, Jennifer and Mike Stephenson of Jonesboro and Jill and Michael Smith of Brookland; five grandchildren and their spouses, Justin and Hannah Mullins of Jonesboro, Sloan and Allie Stephenson of Allen, Texas, Sydney Stephenson of Benton, Eli Mullins of Jonesboro, and Sydney Smith of Brookland; two great-grandchildren, Luke Mullins and Charley Mullins; and a special cousin and her husband, Virginia and Jim Davis of Paragould.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at Emerson Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with Dr. Stan Ballard officiating. Danny Honnoll will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow in Pine Log Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will include Justin Mullins, Eli Mullins, Sloan Stephenson, Cole Duncan, Michael Smith and Mike Stephenson.
Honorary pallbearers will include Danny Honnoll, Larry Catt, Jerry Seats, Jerry Parks, John Dacus, Paul Spurlock and the members of George Williamson's Sunday school class.
