Timothy McGill Obituary

March 26, 1962 - June 10, 2008

Timothy Arthur McGill, 46, passed away on June 10, 2008, after a long battle with cancer. A service and celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 13, at Tennant Funeral Home. The service will be followed by a full military burial at Riverside Cemetery.

Tim was born March 26, 1962, the son of the late Arthur F. and Florence Ann (Sherwin) McGill of Las Vegas. He graduated from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas in 1980. He studied archeology at the University of Wyoming before joining the U.S. Army in 1981.

He proudly served his country for over 11 years, including service in Kuwait during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He retired from the military after being diagnosed with cancer in 1992.

Tim made a full recovery from that cancer and went on to work for the Nevada Department of Corrections as a nurse. In 1996, he transferred from the nursing department to custody.

In 1996, Tim and his family moved to Colorado, where he accepted a job with the Colorado Department of Corrections. He worked for a year and a half at the maximum security prison in Cañon City when he got the opportunity to promote to sergeant and move to Sterling.

He helped open up the Sterling Correctional Facility and was one of the first employees to start there. He was active in the Escape Team and taught firearms and safety. He was promoted to lieutenant shortly after moving here and decided to make his home here with his family.

Tim also worked part-time as a medical examiner for life insurance companies.

He retired from the Colorado Department of Corrections in July 2007 after losing his left leg and hip to a new cancer.

Tim was never discouraged and always stayed positive. He was a true inspiration to all he came in contact with. He did not let his disability slow him down or prevent him from doing the things he loved.

He was an amazing and loving husband, father and grandpa. He loved being around his family and they were always his number one priority.

Tim also loved golfing, fishing and the Denver Broncos.

He is survived by his wife and best friend, Angeline; and three children, Daryl McGill of Las Vegas, Alicia McClaran and husband Michael, and Brianne McGill, all of Sterling. He is also survived by one sister, Patty McGill of Las Vegas; two brothers, Michael McGill and Joe McGill and wife Tammy, all of Las Vegas; and one grandson, Liam Arthur McClaran of Sterling.

Tim will be missed by all of those he has touched.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or Disabled Veterans, Box 14301, Cincinatti, OH 45250.
