Albert Scables Obituary

Albert E. Scables, 92, of South Windsor, and formerly of Manchester, beloved, longtime companion of the late Arlene M. Robinson, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2011, at Woodlake of Tolland.

He was born Feb. 13, 1919, in Brockton, Mass., son of the late Anthony and Agnes Skoburzeni, and had been a resident of Manchester since 1941. Al was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran serving during World War II in North Africa in a Calvary Division and was one of few men honored directly by Haile Selassie, the last King of Ethiopia. Prior to his retirement in 1997, he had been a police officer with the Manchester Police Department for more than 30 years and had performed several firsts on the force: first motorcycle patrolman, first Scuba reconnaissance, and first patrolman to have a seatbelt in his cruiser. Al earned his pilot's license and enjoyed flying as often as possible. He was a life member of both the Army & Navy Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2046.

Mr. Scables is survived by a daughter, Marcia Scables of North Kingston, R.I.; two sons, Robert Scables, and his wife, Dawn, of Coventry, and Albert Scables of Manchester; two granddaughters, Nicole Scables and Kimberly Garafolo; and a great-grandson, Anthony Webb.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 27, 2011, at 10 a.m. at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester. Burial with military honors will be held in the East Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Manchester Police Athletic League, 239 E. Middle Turnpike, P.O. Box 191, Manchester, CT 06040.
