Andrew Hoffman Obituary

Andrew "Andy" Hoffman died March 24, 2023, with his loving wife and best friend, Pat, at his bedside. He was 91.

Born to Andrew Hoffman and Margaret Flaherty Hoffman June 5, 1931, Andy lived a long and rewarding life. He was a 1953 graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Engineering, and he joined Hamilton Standard after graduation. During his 34-year career he rose through the company's management ranks and retired in 1987 as Executive Vice President.

He spent much of his career working in the U.S. Manned Space Program. He was part of the company's team that designed and developed the Apollo EMU (space suit assembly), Apollo Lunar Module Life Support System, Sky Lab Crew Equipment, and Space Shuttle Life Support System. During his tenure in the space program, he received numerous awards including two NASA Public Service Awards for his work on the Apollo and Space Shuttle Programs, and Program Manager of the Year awards from Grumman, McDonnell, and Rockwell International for his contribution to the Lunar Module, Sky Lab, and Space Shuttle Programs. After retirement from Hamilton Standard, he formed a consulting firm East Windsor Associates where he continued his space work as a consultant to NASA, United Technologies, Boeing, McDonnell and other aerospace companies where he conducted studies and was a member of select review teams. He was most proud of his company's and personal contribution to the Apollo 13 rescue mission.

Andy also had great interest in his community. He was a member of various Town of East Windsor boards, commissions and committees. He was a member of the Board of Selectmen, Planning and Zoning Commission, Economic Development Commission, River Heritage Committee, Housing for the Elderly Committee, and Broad Brook Mill Preservation and Restoration Committee. Additionally, he was the Chairman of the St. Catherine Cemetery Committee for 20 years and a member of the Connecticut Trolley Museum Fund Raising Committee. In 2014 he was awarded the St. Joseph's Medal by the Archdiocese of Hartford. In 2016 he was inducted into the University of Connecticut Academy of Distinguished Engineers, and in 2017 he was named East Windsor Rotary Club Man of the Year. His love for town and country was deep and unwavering. His lifelong goal was to make things better, but most of all he was a family man whose love for family members was endless.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 54 years, Pat. Their love for each other was deep and strong. He also leaves his sister Margaret Hoffman of Broad Brook; sister-in-law Germaine Hoffman and family of Broad Brook; nephew Douglas Hoffman and Sharon, of Enfield; niece Amy Pinder and husband, Dan of Palm City, Florida; grand-niece Jessica LaChance and husband, Stefen and sons Tristen and Camden of Ellington; grand-nephew Timothy Easter of Broad Brook; grand-nieces Kristen Hoffman and family, and Courtney Scarborough and family of Enfield; and cousin Wally Koetsch of Enfield. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Jerry and Barry.

Andy wanted to be remembered as a good man who worked hard to make his country and community better because of his dedication and work ethic. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Connecticut Trolley Museum, PO Box 360, East Windsor, CT 06088. The family would also like to thank Hospice nurse Eileen, and home health care provider Joyce for the excellent care they provided to Andy.

I started my engineering career at Hamilton Space Systems and worked for Andy through the 80's. His sense of vision and determination was legendary and set the bar for professionalism for myself and so many fellow colleagues. My sincere condolence to friends and loved ones for your grief and loss.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Andy. My dad, John Bertrand worked with Andy for many years. I can remember Andy sitting in our kitchen and I would be sitting on his lap. I also remember, when my dad had his first bout of MS, Andy's family came, his mother included, and mowed the lawn for my dad until he was well. I have such fond memories of Andy when I was a little girl. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends at this sad time. He was a wonderful, talented and caring man.
