Donald Norton Obituary

Deacon Donald E. Norton, 76, of East Windsor, formerly of Windsor, beloved husband of Beverly (Rich) Norton, died peacefully Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital, surrounded by his family.

He was born in New Britain to the late Russell and Yvonne (Nicholas) Norton; he lived in West Springfield and Monroe prior to moving to Windsor in 1974. Don graduated from American International College with a Bachelor of Science in accounting in 1960 and earned his MBA in 1980. He was an asset manager and portfolio manager for real estate investments for Cigna prior to his retirement in 1996. He had been active in the real estate investment industry, having served for several years on the board of directors of the National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries and as the organization's president in 1993-94. He was ordained a deacon of the Roman Catholic Church in 1983 and had served at St. Gabriel Parish in Windsor until 1999 and was currently serving at St. Mary/St. Robert Parishes in Windsor Locks. He was a dedicated Deacon who loved serving others and preaching the word of God. He dedicated many years to visiting the sick, religious counseling, religious education, and performing countless weddings and baptisms. Don was employed as a professional assistant with Carmon Funeral Home since 2004.

Besides his wife of 54 years, he leaves a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Joaquin Iriondo of South Windsor; a son and daughter-in-law Richard and Laura Norton of Tolland; a daughter and son-in-law Andrea and Jason Jamrog of Suffield; and nine grandchildren, Justin and Andrew Iriondo, Jessica Norton, Jeremy and Jessica Reid, Brian Davey, Jack, Daniel, and Elizabeth Jamrog; and a great-grandson, Connor O'Shaughnessy. He also leaves two brothers and two sisters, Roger Norton of Florida, Lee Norton (Jeanie) of New York, Elaine Smith (James) of East Hampton, and Sharon Hamill (Richard) of Salem; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Barbara and Bruce MacLeod of Chester, and many nieces and nephews.

Don coached several Little League teams in Windsor, was a fan of the Mets and UConn basketball, and loved going to his grandchildren's Little League games. He also enjoyed caring for his gardens and cars.

His family will receive friends Monday (today), Aug. 25, 2014, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a Diaconate Service to be held at 8 p.m., at St. Mary Church, 42 Spring St., Windsor Locks.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014, 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, Windsor Locks. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Windsor Locks.

I am very saddened to hear about Deacon Norton's passing. He was my CCD teacher when I was very young and it is because of him that I created a strong connection to the church through music that has lasted well over 30 years. I have never and will never forget him and his kind and gentle soul. God Bless

It is with great shock and sadness that we heard the news today at 4:30 mass of Deacon Don's passing. He was such a wonderful, gentle, Christian presence and great influence with the young alter servers, one of which is our daughter Emily. I can't imagine Mass without him, he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him, to you his family and friends and to the entire St. Mary's family. God Bless You.
