Ferne MacDonald

Ferne (Frederickson) MacDonald, 84, of South Windsor, beloved wife of the late Norman E. MacDonald, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Jan. 17, 2017, at Rockville General Hospital.

Ferne was born Aug. 7, 1932, in Willimantic, daughter of the late Royal and Florence (Jones) Frederickson. Ferne grew up in Mansfield, where she lived for most of her life. She graduated from Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in 1952 and worked at her life's passion as a nurse for 45 years. She was employed at Natchaug Valley Visiting Nurses Association in Willimantic for 30 years. Ferne was a longtime member of St. Paul's Episcopal church in Willimantic. Ferne enjoyed traveling and playing cards, and performed volunteer work at the church and VNA after her retirement. Her life was spent helping her family and other people.

Ferne is survived by her children, Neil MacDonald and his wife, Julie, of Willington, Judith Winn and her husband, Ralph, of East Windsor, and Mark MacDonald and his wife, Micki, of San Jose, California; as well as eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandson and a great-grandson.

Her family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 21, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor. A memorial service will follow at 5 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private at the request of her family.
