Frank Saunders Obituary

Frank Raymond Saunders Jr., 80, of Ellington, beloved husband of 62 years of Carole A. (Koehler) Saunders, died peacefully at home, Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

Frank was born Aug. 18, 1937, in Manchester and was the only child of the late Frank R. Saunders Sr. and Olga (Scotta) Saunders. He was raised in Manchester and Bolton, attended local schools, and he was a graduate of Manchester High School and Cheney Technical High School, Class of 1955. He earned his Bachelor's in engineering from the University of Connecticut. Frank was employed as a manufacturing engineer/manager for Hamilton Standard until his retirement in 1991.

He and Carole enjoyed many years of retirement in their second home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Frank was an avid golfer, a gifted gourmet cook, and an ardent saltwater and freshwater fisherman. He was a former season ticket holder for the Hartford Whalers and was a huge Red Sox fan. Over the years he had many pets which he adored.

In addition to his wife Carole, he is survived by his three children, Sandra Louise (Saunders) Lemieux and Robert Browning of Ellington, Karen Lee (Saunders) Furnari and her husband, Mark, of East Granby, and Frank Raymond Saunders III and his wife, Teresa, of Superior, Wisconsin; and four loving and special grandchildren, Frank Raymond Saunders IV, Danielle Carole Lemieux, Seth Adam Saunders, and Brittany Lynn Furnari; as well as three great-grandchildren, Faith, Aaliyah, and Jackson Saunders. In addition to his parents, Frank was predeceased by his son-in-law, Roger J. Lemieux; and his cousin, Joan Duell, whom was like a sister to him.

Calling hours will be held at Holmes-Watkins Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester, Monday, Aug. 20, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. A graveside service will follow at noon in East Cemetery, Manchester.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joan Duell Memorial Nursing Scholarship, c/o Rockville High School, 70 Loveland Hill Road, Vernon, CT 06066, or to Trinity Health at Home Hospice, 101 Phoenix Ave., Enfield, CT 06082.

Carole, Karen and family-- It was a pleasure and an honor to be a part of Frank's care team the last several months. I am so sorry for your loss, but also grateful that he is at peace. I hope you can find your own peace during this difficult time. He was an amazing man! (even if he was a Red Sox fan!)
