George Evans Obituary
George T. Evans passed away peacefully on June 29, 2023, at Hartford Hospital. Born on August 18, 1924, in Manchester, CT, George was the son of Charles T. Evans and Georgianna (Lennon) Evans. He was a man of great character, whose life was marked by service, dedication, and an unwavering love for his family and community.
George graduated from Manchester High School in 1942, followed by training at the University of Michigan School of Engineering. He then served in the U.S. Army for three years during World War II. As part of General George Patton's Third Army, he participated in campaigns in the Ardennes Forest, the follow-up on the Battle of the Bulge, and the push to reach the Russian front in Eastern Germany. For his bravery and service, he was awarded the Combat Medics Badge.
After his service, George embarked on a 40-year career at Aetna Life and Casualty, retiring as a Manager in Pension Administration. He was a dedicated professional and a member of the Fellow Life Management Institute.
George was predeceased by his loving wife of 37 years, Ruth. He leaves behind two sons, Robert of New Hampshire, and David of California. George was also a doting grandfather to Steven, Jonathan, Shannon, and Michael, and a proud great-grandfather to Sally and Bowie.
George spent many happy hours on the green as an avid golfer and golf fan. He was also a lifelong Red Sox fan, and coach of Little League Baseball and Youth Basketball. His dedication to the youth of his community extended beyond the sports field, as he also covered Little League Baseball for the sports department of the Manchester Herald.
A man of faith, George was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church. He served in various church activities, always willing to lend a hand where needed. His faith was a guiding force in his life, providing him with strength and comfort in times of difficulty.
Friends and relatives are welcome to join the family for a graveside service in East Cemetery, 220 E. Center Street, Manchester, on July 10, beginning at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Book of Remembrance, 41 Park St., Manchester, The Salvation Army, or Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation.
