Gerda Mikkelsen Obituary

Gerda Viola Mikkelsen, 95, of East Windsor, passed away on July 19, 2020, at Hartford Hospital. Gerda was the loving wife of Harald Mikkelsen for 54 years. He predeceased her in March 2002.

Gerda was born in Fredericia, Denmark in 1924. She married her husband Harald in 1947. They immigrated to the United States, with their three-year-old son in 1951. They made East Windsor their home in 1953. Gerda has been an active member of the First Congregational Church of East Windsor since 1952.

Gerda leaves behind her son, Carsten; daughter Marianne, son-in-law Mark; three grandsons, their wives; two great-granddaughters and five great-grandsons. In Denmark, she leaves behind two sisters; a brother; and many nieces, nephews, and their children.

Gerda stayed home caring for her two children until they were old enough to be responsible, at which point she got a job at Connecticut Mutual in Hartford. Gerda has always been active in her community. She served as a Girl Scout leader for a number of years, both in Denmark and the United States. She was very active in her church, "Marriage Encounter", and considered the membership as her family. She was also active in the East Windsor senior center. Gerda enjoyed biking, walking, reading, and doing word searches. She loved spending time with family and friends.

The Bassinger & Dowd Funeral Home, 37 Gardner St., East Windsor, is handling arrangements. Due to our current coronavirus pandemic, no memorial events are currently scheduled.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the First Congregational Church, 124 Scantic Road, East Windsor CT 06088.

I just learned of Mrs. Mikkelsen's passing. She was my bible school teacher when I was a very young boy. I recall her fondly as a kind and warmhearted woman. My deepest condolences to her family and friends.

A wonderful, saintly woman who was a dear friend to my grandparents Carmen and Tony for decades. My family is so much richer for knowing Gerda and Harald. I am happy that they are now all reunited in Heaven, watching over us. I’ll always be inspired by Gerda’s trust in Jesus, her joy, and her perseverance. To Marianne and your entire family, thank you for the inestimable, positive impact that your family has had on mine.

Vores faster i Amerika / Dear Aunt Gerda
You were always a part of us, even though you were on the other side of the Great Ocean. You and Harald had traveled the long way from Denmark to America. For us, America was Fred Astair, who we knew from TV. When we were kids, you and America represented the dream of freedom, big cars, modern houses, and Cape Cod. We received packages and beautiful postcards (with your wonderful writing) from you. The American Dream also was hard work, but You were always grateful for your life and we are grateful to have met you and your family - Our American Family.
Nancy and Karen Bech visit you and Harald when Nancy was a young Girl. Morten visit you when he was at College in USA. Oliver (Morten's son), Morten, Torben and Liselotte visited you in 2011- They surprised you in your church, and after a visit to your home, everyone visited Marianne and Mark.
You visited us in Denmark many times. We have incredibly good memories from your visit to Vejle in May 2018, where you were in Denmark with Chris - it was nice to greet Chris. And it was nice to greet Marianne and Mark when they were in Denmark.
Carsten, Marianne, Mark, Chris and the Nowak-Family will always be welcome in Denmark. You meant a lot to our father, Ejvind, your little brother - and you meant a lot to Marie, Ejvind’s wife and to his Family.
Love Marie & Nancy, Kate, John, Torben, Morten - husbands, wives, children, sons-in-law and grandchildren.

Gerda was one of the most inspiring people I have ever had the joy to know. May she rest well in the hands of heaven.

To Marianne and the entire family of Mrs. Mikkelsen, I send my deepest sympathy. Mrs. Mikkelsen was a sweet, good humored, kind and generous person. She was a big part of the East Windsor community with her service to groups and church. Her bright smile and cheery disposition will be missed. May your sadness be filled with the many memories of a life well lived.
