Henry H. Broer, 91 of Somers, CT died on February 20, 2024, at home surrounded by his family and loving wife Patricia of over 63 years. He was born in Brooklyn, NY. His family moved to Somers in the 1940's. The Korean War, in which he served in the Air Force from 1952 – 1956, interrupted his education. He was a graduate of American International College in 1958, and continued with graduate studies at the City University of New York from 1958 -1963. His thesis studies were in Psychopharmacology. While attending graduate school, he was a Research Assistant at Maimonides Medical Center.
For almost 30 years he was a Clinical Chemist in the Department of Pathology at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA, retiring in 1995. During his tenure there he was also Technical Director of Clinical Chemistry and Hematology. Prior to his appointment at Baystate Health he was Chief Medical Technologist at Citizens General Hospital in New Kensington, PA for 4 years. He was a member of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry, a past member of The American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Sciences and the Korean War Veterans Association.
Following retirement, he did many years of volunteer work at the Computer Center at the JCC in Longmeadow, MA. He was a member of the Town of Somers School Building Committee, and the Conservation Commission. He and his wife enjoyed their years of retirement with travel across the U.S. and Europe and several cruises. They visited all 50 states; their visits to Idaho and the northwest were especially memorable.
He leaves a wife of 63 years, Patricia Lyons Broer, 4 sons, Christopher and his wife, Angela of Myrtle Point, OR, Michael and his wife, Lisa of Chicopee, MA, Stephen and his wife, Colleen of Monroe CT, and David and his wife, Andrea of Ashford, CT; 6 grandchildren, Jacob, Kaitlyn, Aidan, Benjamin, Mary Beth and John who were the joy of his life. He was predeceased by his father Herman in 1932, and his mother and stepfather, Susie and Barney Schleinhege, and by his sister, Helen Clark of Somers.
Calling hours will be Sunday February 25, from 1-4 pm at the Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main St., Somers. Funeral services will be held Monday morning, February 26, at 9:30 am from the funeral home with a procession to St. Mary's Church, 27 Somers Rd, Hampden, MA for the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00 am.
