Isabel Menger Obituary

Isabel B. ("Liz") Menger, 92 years old, peacefully departed this life on November 16, 2007.

Recently of Tolland, she spent most of her last 25 years in the Vernon area. She was the widow of Robert Menger, who died in 1968. She was also predeceased in 1998 by her eldest son, Gary Menger of California.

Born in 1915, Liz grew up in Burlington, Vt., and graduated from Mount St. Mary Parochial High School. She met her husband while he was stationed with the U.S. Army at Fort Ethan Allen in Vermont and they were married in 1941. They lived in New York City for a time prior to settling in East Hartford, where they raised their five children. Liz was fiercely loyal to family and friends. That and her outgoing personality ensured a lively and well- populated life. Those who knew and loved her enjoy many vivid and fond memories that will live on despite her absence. She took great delight in get-togethers for a nice dinner or a trip to the track/casino. Her independence and spirit of adventure defined her. After retiring from her career position with the Hartford Board of Education in 1980, she worked at South Windsor Bank & Trust, and then later at Gigi's Busy Bee Restaurant in Tolland. Various other part-time jobs followed until the mid-90s when physical limitations forced her to permanently retire.

Mourning her passing are her sons, Bob Menger of Storrs and Brian Menger and Maria Greening of Dunnellon, Fla; daughters Therese and Ken Huff of Gouldsboro, Maine, and Dolores and AI McCrea of Catawba, N.C. She also leaves four granddaughters, Catherine Williams and family of Manchester, Erica Smith of North Carolina, and Erin and Kelly McCrea of Catawba, N.C.

Arrangements are being handled by Newkirk and Whitney, 318 Burnside Avenue, East Hartford.

At Liz's request, there will be a simple memorial service there on Monday, November 19, at 6 to 8 p.m. All are welcome to attend and share memories.

Liz's family respectfully requests that no flowers be sent. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the charity of your choice or to Liz's favorite charity: St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 1893, Memphis, TN 38101-9950.

To The Menger Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.
Isabel will be sorely missed by all her friends at Woodlake. It was an honor for me to get to sit and have coffee & donuts each morning with your mother. Such an amazing woman full of spirit and quick wit. So sorry for your loss.

Hey Ma,
It's been a long hard road for the last year or so. I take comfort in the fact that you are now reunited with loved ones from your past. There won't be a day that goes by that you won't be thought of with love by all of us left behind. Rest in peace, no more fear or pain or worries.
All my love Bobby.

Therese, Dolores, Bob and Brian, I have many happy memories of hanging out with other dazed and confused youths on Crescent Drive! Your mom was like a mom to everybody. How lucky you were to have her for so many years. What I loved best was her storytelling and her wonderful sense of humor. Frank and I will be there tomorrow night. Bev (Sullivan) Smith

I have so many memories of "Ma Menger" that there is not enough space here to list them, but they will remain in my heart forever. She was a feisty, outgoing, independent and outspoken great lady. She left a positive imprint on anyone who knew her. I was happy to have had spent time with her and Therese a few months ago. She will be sorely missed. My deepest heartfelt sympathy goes to Therese, Dolores, Bob, and Brian. Remember that memories are forever so keep them close to your heart.

To all the Menger Family,

I was so sorry to read of your Mom's passing. I remember her well. She really was a fun person to be around. The last time I saw her was at my Mom's funeral. I know you will all miss her.

I'll miss you grammy more than anything. They say I'm the lucky one, being the last she showed recognition and affection toward...Well I take that to heart. I will miss seeing you everyday as a kid, you opened me open to so many things and you were a great role model. I'll love you forever and think of you everyday. You will always be in my prayers. I take comfort in believing that you are in a better place looking down on us with a smile. I'll miss you gram...always and forever.
