Jeanine was my cousin, she was a beautiful child with golden hair, blue eyes and a smile that made you smile back.
During the summer of '69 I spent a few weeks at my aunt Ginny's with "the girls". During the 60's I was writing poetry, who wasn't. Jeanine loved to listen to my poetry and prior to my going home she wrote me a poem on a torn of piece of orange construction paper. (Which I still have and have attached to this note.) In many ways Jeanine was the best of us - a sensitive soul, a beautiful soul and I loved her. My mother's people, the Brown's, were never a close family, people who talked each other down rather than blessing and edifying.
So, we lost touch along the way, although I often thought of her.
Two months ago I Googled her, wrote her name in my appointment book, and planned to call her for a visit. I did not make that call and then on Wednesday I received the news of her passing. I am going to frame the poem and the sticky note with her name on it to remind me to always do what your heart tells you.
Nini, I am sorry for the pain you endured, I am saddened that I did not know of your joys in life as well.
Go in peace fair child, until we meet again....
With love-your cousin,
Barbara Russell Grey
