Joan McCabe Obituary

Joan "Joni" Marie McCabe, 62 years old, of Ellington, passed away on April 26, 2010.

Born Sept. 13, 1947, in Hartford to the late Richard L. McCabe and Harriet Moriarty Northrup, Joan was a graduate of Greater Hartford Community College School of Nursing and Eastern Connecticut State University where she earned a bachelor's of science in business administration. She worked for many years at Manchester Memorial Hospital before joining Medtronic Inc. as a clinical specialist in the cardiac device management business, which she retired from in May of 2009. Joan had many interests and loved traveling, swimming, gardening, bike riding, knitting, jewelry making, and lazy days at the beach. Joan was passionate about creating awareness of ovarian cancer symptoms so she founded "jewels for joni," which comprises a group of women who lovingly make and sell bracelets to fundraise for NOCC (National Ovarian Cancer Coalition) and Ovations for the Cure. A longtime volunteer, Joan was on the board of directors for the Rockville General Hospital Auxiliary and spent many years as a member of the Ellington Junior Women's Club. Joan had a true love for life and was an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

Joan is survived by her loving husband, Joseph M. Brzezicki of Ellington; her three daughters and their husbands, Mary and Welbi Vega of Norwich, Darcy and Tim Biathrow of South Windsor, and Kristen and Robert Allevo of Somers. She was affectionately known as "Nana" to her five grandchildren, Sara, Ryan, Shane, Hannah, and Noah. She is also survived by her two brothers and their wives, Richard and Diane McCabe and Curtis and Robin Northrup; and her nieces and nephew, Melanee, Ashley, and Joshua.

A memorial service will be held at All Saints Church, 25 School St., Somers, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 29. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours.

The John F. Tierney Funeral Home, Manchester, has care of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to NOCC (National Ovarian Cancer Coalition) or to the Joan McCabe Nursing Scholarship Fund and sent to 47 Blueberry Circle, Ellington, CT 06029.

We got to know Joan because her beautiful daughter Mary married my brother Welbi. We got to know each other through holidays and grand babies birthdays. She was always so beautiful and warm. I loved her smile and her zest for life. I have heard many wonderful stories from time spent with my niece Sara about her Nana. She will be dearly missed. Our love and prayers to Joe and all her family.

Please accept my sincere condolences. I remember being at Joan's house on Glenwood in Ellington with a bunch of kids back in high school; we had such a great time. Joan had that love of life and spirit even back then that seemed beyond her young years.

Dear Family & Friends,
I am the neighbor who shared the same street and same last name as Joni.
Although Joni & I only met once, our paths crossed in such a unique way, it gave me insight as to how beloved she was to her family and friends. Through the years, I received many misdirected phone calls, cards and Eastern CT State College Alumni mail which gave me an insight to her life. She was admired and loved by so many people... I am proud to have shared the neighborhood and similar name. She was so blessed to have had such a loving and supportive group of family and friends.
With Sincere Condolances, Jamie McCabe
