John Rohan Obituary

The Rev. John P. Rohan, 67, of East Hartford, formerly of Manchester, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at his home.

Born in Manchester on Feb. 14, 1945, the son of the late Dorothy McHale and John Gorman Rohan, Father Rohan attended St. James Grammar School. He then attended St. Thomas Seminary High School and Junior College in Bloomfield, graduating in 1966. He continued his studies for the priesthood at Christ the King Seminary at St. Bonaventure, N.Y., where he pursued his graduate studies. Ordained to the priesthood on May 27, 1972, by the Most Rev. John F. Whealon, archbishop of Hartford. Father Rohan served as an assistant pastor at St. John of the Cross Parish in Middlebury from 1972 until 1973. In 1973 he was appointed to Saint Rita Parish in Hamden, and then in 1976 he was assigned to Blessed Sacrament Parish in Hamden. In September of 1979, he was appointed co-pastor of St. Francis Parish in Naugatuck, a position he held until September of 1981 when he became director of Catholic chaplains and co-director of the department of pastoral care at Hartford Hospital. While at Hartford Hospital, Father served on the ethics committee and was a founding member of the trauma support team. In August of 1989, Father became pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in South Windsor where he served until December of 2001. He then became priest in residence at St. Rose Parish in East Hartford.

In May of 2004 when the parishes of St. Rose and St. Isaac Jogues were linked, Father became administrator of both parishes. In January of 2005, St. Mary Parish in East Hartford joined St. Rose and St. Isaac Jogues to form the cluster of the Catholic Parishes of East Hartford North, and Father Rohan was appointed pastor of the three parishes in the cluster, a position he continued to hold until his death. Under his leadership, the three parishes came together to form a model of what can happen when strengths and resources are shared for the building up of the Kingdom of God through the ministry of the church, while each community maintained its own identity. For many years, Father served as a trustee of Goodwin College when it was first beginning and was chairman of the academic committee. Working with the college, Father developed a unique partnership between the college and St. Rose School. Father also ministered to the retired Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur at Julie House in Windsor. A gifted preacher, he studied in the fellowship program at the College of Preachers in Washington D.C., and taught homiletics for many years to the permanent deacon candidates in the Archdiocese of Hartford. For many years, Father maintained a home in Charlestown, R.I., where he loved to garden and relax.

Father is survived by his niece, Tracy Rohan Willard and her husband, Bill, along with their two children, Liam Willard and Morgan Willard; and his cousins, Timothy Rohan and his wife, Barbara, of Manchester, Nancy Yost of Manchester, and Geraldine DeMarche of Charlestown, R.I. He also leaves behind his longtime friend, Frank Lawlor and his son, Timothy Lawlor, who was Father's godchild. Father was predeceased by his brother, Michael.

Father Rohan's body will lie in state at St. Mary Church, 15 Maplewood Ave., East Hartford, on Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a parish Mass to follow at 8 p.m.

On Thursday, Jan. 24, The Most Rev. Henry J. Mansell, archbishop of Hartford, will be the principal celebrant for the Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, East Hartford, followed by burial in St. James Cemetery, Manchester.

The John F. Tierney Funeral Home, Manchester, has care of the arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Rose Church, 33 Church St., East Hartford, CT 06108.

Father Rohan would have one sermon he would save for the hottest Sunday each summer and I remember it word for word: "Whatever you are doing right, keep doing it. Whatever you are doing wrong STOP it! Amen"
Followed by a great laugh from the congregation.
What a Priest! (and friend).

I extend my most heartfelt condolences to all who mourn this terrible loss. Father Rohan was nothing less than a dedicated, intelligent and thoughtful spiritual counsellor, whose sermons inspired, whose noble actions set an honoured example, and whose effulgent presence, physical and spiritual, was and remains beyond appraisal. I am tremendously thankful to have known the Rev. in my lifetime, and to his family, I extend my firmest prayers and best wishes during this trying time. "For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor anything else in creation, will separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:38-39)

Father Rohan was a wonderful pastor and a dear friend. The world was a better place because of him. He was an outstanding homilist and touched so many lives in ways he would never have known. He was the best the church offered to all who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Tracy, Michael, Tim and Barbara,
I'm so very sorry for the loss of your uncle and cousin. He spoke of you all often, and loved you deeply.
I had the privilege to know Father for years. One day he reached out to me for help in the Cluster Office. Father and his office staff (who are dear friends now) welcomed me with open hearts. For the first time, I was really able to give back, and witness all that was done on a daily basis for our “cluster family”.
The days were busy, phones were ringing, door bells, people coming and going, and father running in and out. As busy as it was, every day we came together for lunch at the kitchen table, the heart of the rectory. We shared prayer, food, stories and lots of laughter, we were a family. It will be those precious times spent with Father that I will remember always.
When it was time for me to leave, it was very difficult. I knew I helped him, but he helped me and my family even more. He believed in me, guided me spiritually and challenged me to reach out and do things that I never would have thought of. He helped me be a better person. Father was strong willed as we all know, intelligent, spiritual and worked tirelessly for us. He was a good Shepherd, he guided his flock, nurtured us spiritually with his teachings, his presence and his love. His homilies speak for themselves; he captivated the young people as well as the adults. You left mass knowing you could face whatever life handed you that week because you received his message.
I saw him 3 weeks ago, not knowing that would be my last good bye. Our Shepherd is now out of pain, no more suffering, and with Jesus reaping rewards for all his hard work here on earth. I will miss him greatly, but will have him in my heart forever. Rest in Peace Father.

Love, Mary aka Bubby

Deeply saddened by the loss of my cousin, Father John. I remember him well from decades ago when he frequently visited my mother and father on Gardner Street. My mother was delighted to have a priest in the family who was a source of inspiration and devotion. He will be greatly missed.

I served on the altar with Father Rohan because I was an altar server for many years. He was such a passionate and wonderful person who taught me so much about God and being a better person. I will never forget that he said the mass that I dedicated to my grandfather and it was so beautiful. His soul definitely rose up straight to heaven. He's finally with God and the angels. Rest in peace and thank you for everything you've done, not just for me, but for the Catholic Communities of East Hartford North.

I first met Fr. Rohan when he helped out at St. Bartholomew's in Manchester. I will always remember his wonderful homilies and his delightful sense of humor. My late husband, Deacon Bill Brown was fortunate to have Father as his Homiletic Instructor in the Deaconate program. The archdiocese has lost a wonderful priest.

Father John , you were always there for us, for every Baptism and Wedding and Funeral you were a part of our family. You connected to each of us in your own way ,sometimes teasing, sometimes comforting, sometimes encouraging. Your own frailties became a strength connecting you to all of us. Thank you for all you did. Rest in Peace my friend. We know you are with The Risen Lord who always was your source of strength and now welcomes you home!

As sad as I was to hear the passing of Father Rohan, who bravely smiled through many painful and hard days of illness, I am also lightened knowing peace had finally come to him. What joys have been opened to him now that he is free from this earthly place? All of us can imagine and almost hear another of his lovely sermons enriching us to the newest wonders of the Lord! God Bless his family & friends during these difficult transitions ahead.

Heaven has received a magnificent Angel in Father Rohan! ... Dear Father Rohan, thank you so much for having placed your trust in me for six years inviting me to join of the Pastoral Council at St. Rose. You always believed that the Hispanic community had so much to give to St. Rose, in East Hartford. You predicted how the community would flourish and indeed, we went from a very few parishioners, to well over 500 under your leadership! You were always a great leader and such an inspiration to all of us! While my mother has been battling a very aggressive cancer for the past four and a half years, I often thought of how brave you were! You were always in my prayers and now I know you must be smiling up in Heaven with our Lord, resting in peace. Our community will be forever grateful to you and will miss your charismatic laughter ...

Our prayers are with you, Fr. Rohan. We are glad you do not have to deal with that terrible cancer any longer.

God our Father,
Your power brings us to birth,
Your providence guides our lives,
and by Your command we return to dust.

Lord, those who die still live in Your presence, their lives change but do not end. I pray for Fr. Rohan's soul and in hope, peace and love for Fr. Rohan's family, relatives and friends in this time of loss.

This is a sad day for all of us we lost a great man.No one could deliver a better homily. Very good friend and mentor. He was simply the best

Ellis Paulman

January 22, 2013

Father Rohan's homilies were always inspiring to my mother and me. He delivered them with a clear, strong voice and he used that voice to great effect when singing the hymns during Mass. He had a wonderful singing voice! Our cluster of churches in East Hartford was blessed to have him as our pastor because his leadership skills and business sense helped to make the linking of the three churches in our cluster a success. Other churches in the Greater Hartford area invited him to speak to them so he could share his clustering experiences with them. He will be greatly missed, and we are grateful that we had him as our pastor during a critical time in the life of our parish (St. Isaac Jogues).
