Marilyn Bertrand Obituary

Marilyn A. (Luko) Bertrand, 58, of Suffield, the beloved wife of 36 years to Gilles Bertrand, entered peacefully into eternal life surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at her home.

She was born on December 30, 1949 in Hartford, a daughter of Jeanette and the late Anton Luko. She resided in Suffield for the past 20 years and prior to that in Stafford and Enfield. Marilyn was a graduate of Hartford High School Class of 1967 and received her degree in Education from Central Connecticut State University in 1971, during which time she was president of her sorority, Lambda Kappa Nu. She continued on to receive her Master's Degree from Central Connecticut as well. Marilyn was employed by the Enfield Board of Education and spent her entire 37 year career as a teacher at Fermi High School, where she was the head of the Business Department and was also an advisor for FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America).

Marilyn is survived by her devoted husband, Gilles; her loving children, Tim Bertrand and his wife, Cara, of Sturbridge, Mass., Patrick Bertrand, Lindsay Bertrand and Todd Bertrand, all of Suffield; her mother, Jeannette (Luko) Mulready of West Hartford; a sister, Gilberta Calegari, and her husband, James of E. Hartford; a brother, Stephen Luko and his wife, Annette, of Terryville; along with many nieces, nephews, and dear friends, as well as her grand-dogs, Tessa and Toby.

Marilyn dedicated her life to her family and friends, always putting others' needs before her own. She loved her yard, her pool, her flower gardens and her home. She loved being the oldest of a group of much younger soccer parents, cheering on her son, Todd, and his teammates, and her presence at all of the games will be missed. She spent many years enjoying all of her children's pursuits and talents, as well as supporting Gil in his love of auto racing. Marilyn enjoyed the good things in life - dancing, singing, boating, laughing, cheering and crying. A White Russian will never be drunk without thoughts of Marilyn in the future.

Services in celebration of Marilyn's life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, Suffield. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Suffield.

Marilyn's family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, Jan. 25, from 4 to 9 p.m. at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels, 43 Shaker Rd., Enfield.

Memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Eye Melanoma Research Fund at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson University, Kimmel Cancer Center, c/o Ms. Helen Lane, 1050B BLSB, 233 S. 10th St., Philadelphia, PA 19107.

Dear Gilles and family:
I just found out today of Marilyn's passing and am deeply shocked. She had been a friend throughout high school and was one of my bridesmaids at my wedding. Even though I moved to CA, we kept in touch throught the years. I will miss her and keep her and your family in my prayers. May her memory be eternal.

To Marilyn's Family:
My heart is so saddened to hear of this tragic loss. Marilyn was not only one of my sorority sisters but she sang at my wedding. I remember her smile, her laughter, her spunk, her positive attitude. I am blessed to have had the privilege of knowing her. May memories of her bring you comfort, prayers of family and friends bring you strength, and the promise that you will be joined together one day bring you hope.

To the Bertrand family:

My deepest condolences go out to the family. our sons Nick and Pat graduated from Suffield High School together. Marilyn and I sat together at the senior banquet for the class of 2001. I had just received notification that I was going to be hired by the Enfield School system, and she was so kind to me to offer words of enouragement.

She was a wonderful person. She will be missed.

My sincerest condolences to the Bertrand family. As a former sorority sister of Marilyn's, I have many fond memories of our college days and the kindness that encompassed all that she was and all that she did. It's tragic that she has passed at such a young age but it's not the years of ones existence that makes its imprint in our world but rather the essence of their life with all of us. It's very apparent that Marilyn has made a difference in the lives of her friends, family, coworkers and students. For that, we are fortunate to have been "touched" by her.
Sincerely,
Kathleen DonAroma

My memories of Marilyn are from eight years at St. Anne’s School in Hartford and four years at HPHS. We had a very strict upbringing in the Franco-American Catholic parish. I imagine that Marilyn ran her classroom a little more loosely than the regimen we had with les Soeurs de Saint Esprit at St. Anne’s. Her love of singing was forged in our choir (including marching down Park Street to sing Gregorian chants at funerals for ten cents a student!). But the nuns’ standards and those of her talented parents created a woman who had so much energy, creativity, morals and love to raise her own children and those of others to become caring individuals. “Faith, hope, love but the greatest of these is love.” She’s gone too soon from her family and friends but we will cherish her sweet memory.

Mrs. Bertrand was a very caring and thought full person. I'm a student at Fermi High School. I had her for all of my high school career excecpt for this year. She taught me so much. She was a very patient with the students. I was a helper of hers for some of the school year. And a great educator. Best wishes to the family.

My sincerest sympathy to Gilles and family.
Marilyn was one of my students at CCSU and later I worked with her in FBLA, since I was the State Advisor for FBLA.
Marilyn was an excellent student and teacher. She was compassionate, yet demanding of her students and well-liked by all of her peers.
She will be missed!

Dear Gil and family,
I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Marilyn's passing. She was one of the best teachers I ever had in high school and good friend in my life always. She is responsible for creating the work ethics I'm proud to say I have. She was an instramental part of my life then and now. I am grateful that I did get to see her before I moved to Virginia. My deepest condolences to all of Marilyn's family. She will be terribly missed.

Gilles and family,
I was deeply saddened to hear the news about Marilyn. She has been one of my dearest friends for many years and I will miss her. There wasn't a finer parent, wife, and teacher anywhere. She always cared about everybody and was always there when she was needed. Fermi High will not be the same without her. I will truly miss her retirement party planning and her friendship.
Her thoughts and prayers are with you and with Marilyn.

Fondly,

Marilyn was a vibrant, compassionate , and loving individual. She will always be remembered in that way. She fought a tremendous fight against odds that were heavily stacked against her. And, never lost her will or spirit. She continued to always ask about others and wish them well in the midst of her own personal suffering. It is merciful that she now be allowed to rest in peace and walk with those who have passed before her. We are all enriched by having come to know her and to have had her in our lives. Our deepest sympathy to her husband and children for their loss.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Mrs. Bertrand's family. I am a graduate of Fermi H.S. and had her as a teacher in her first three years of teaching. She was more like a friend than a teacher. She was an inspiration to me. I attribute my successful career to her guidance and instruction. She went on to teach my daughter who thinks of her often when she is doing something at work that she learned from Mrs. Bertrand. She was an extraordinary woman who touched and influenced both my daughter and I in so many positive ways. She will always be fondly remembered.
