Norma Keeney Obituary

Norma B. Keeney of Somers, beloved widow of Ralph "Bud" D. Keeney Jr. who died in 1952, passed away peacefully at Arden Courts, Avon, with her family by her side.

Norma was born July 23, 1919, in Longmeadow, Mass., daughter of the late Edgar and May (Fiske) Beatty. She was raised in Longmeadow and was a graduate of Classical High School and Mt. Holyoke College, Class of 1940, where she also was May Queen. Norma married Ralph "Bud" D. Keeney Jr., a vice president of the former Somersville Manufacturing Co., and enjoyed eight wonderful years of marriage until his death from complications of diabetes. She became a single parent and raised her children in a house filled with love. Norma was an accomplished songwriter and musician, playing the organ and accordion. With Bud's passing, she learned to use power tools, making furniture and toys for her family. Her talents were passed down to her children and grandchildren who were the beneficiaries of her handiwork. She attended the Somers Congregational Church and supported many community activities during her lifetime including the Somers Senior Citizens.

Norma is survived by her loving children, Normand A. Keeney II, and his wife, Jane, of Avon, Diane K. Andrus, and her husband, Herbert E. Andrus Jr., of Granby; her five cherished grandchildren, Erin A. Kuzmeskus (Adam), Jennifer Keeney-Bleeg (James), Kelly A. Poskus (Joel), Jeffrey A. Keeney and Jason T. Andrus (Katelyn); her six adoring great-grandchildren, Bruin, Bella, Zinnia, Grace, Elliott, and Julian; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Bud, she was predeceased by her infant son, Douglas Keeney, and her siblings, Lois Bull, Barbara Costales, and Ruth Schwenger.

A memorial service in celebration of Norma's life will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at noon at the Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main St., Somers. Her family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. Norma will be interred in West Cemetery next to Bud at the convenience of the family.

Aunt Norma was a wonderful neighbor as I grew up. She was there always smiling, ready to help. Serving as lifeguard at the family pool, she didn't miss a thing. She and Aunt Julian were vigilant with the safety of all. One day as Tom Moore took a leap off the diving board with absolutely no idea how to swim, Aunt Norma quickly dove into the deep end, fully dressed - watch and all, to save him. I think that moment was a reflection of her consistent nature to help whenever, wherever she could. She never slowed with her adoration of family and her perspective of values. My condolences, Norm and Diane, I will miss her although I know you will carry on all that was important to her. My tears are here and I wish I was there with you at this time.
Your cousin, James Keeney
