Richard Tapp Obituary

Richard Emery Tapp's life reflected his love of family, country, the great outdoors, and friends.

Besides his wife, Marianne Holzman Tapp, he is survived by his brother Ronald Tapp of Paterson, New Jersey; his sister-in-law Lorraine DeFreitas and her husband, James; his niece Lisa DeFreitas; his niece Sarah Weber and her husband, Alex and their two children Jane and Walter all of Scarborough, Maine.

His game dinners, holiday parties, picnics, stories, jokes, teasing and cooking will always be remembered. Photos of his great-niece and nephew made him smile with love. Richard was proud to be a USMC veteran of the Vietnam War Era. Memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country often brought him to tears. As Chairman of the Tolland Veterans Recognition Commission, he initiated a tribute to the two Tolland soldiers killed in action during the Vietnam War. Richard along with local legislators named two bridges after Lance Corporal Blanchette and Sargent LeBlond as a permanent memorial. He often said it was his most meaningful achievement. Hunting and fishing were a passion. He recalled the joy of hunting and fishing in New Jersey with his father, uncles, and brother. In Connecticut he found many more streams and woods to walk. He was a member of the Rockville Fish & Game, the Ruffed Grouse Society and Trout Unlimited. He served on the Citizens Advisory Council to the DEP. He was an Instructor for the Connecticut Aquatic Resources Educational Program, as well as a member of the American Hunting Dog Club. As an Associate member of the CT. Falconers Association, he worked to help pass a Connecticut bill into law that recognized falconry in the State. Richard could start a conversation with anyone and find an interest or idea they shared. Breakfast at Rein's Deli was how his day started ... a perfect place for him to meet new and old friends and find good conversation. Richard was born on December 23, 1946, in Paterson, New Jersey to the late Constance and Elmer Tapp. He was raised in Clifton, New Jersey, and graduated Clifton High School. His profession was an electromechanical designer.

Richard passed away at home on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022. Richard said that he gave daily thanks to God for all the good people in his life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew or loved him.

Calling hours will be at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road in Vernon, on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022, from 2 to 4 p.m., with Military Honors to be rendered at 3:30 p.m. Burial is private.

Rich and I were volunteer instructors in the State of Connecticut's Aquatic Resources Education program for 25 years. He was a wonderful person who was always willing to share his fishing knowledge. I know that he had a positive impact on hundreds of people over the years. He always worked with the small group of us in our area of Vernon, Tolland, and surrounding towns to provide fishing education to residents. One of my favorite memories was when we did a class and we would go out for pizza afterwards. One class, I brought my daughter (about 12 at the time, it was her birthday) and Rich and Ray Gorsky had the pizza restaurant serve her a cupcake with a candle in it and sang "Happy Birthday" to her. Rich was a good man.

After six years of serving with Rich on the Tolland Veterans Recognition Commission, we became good friends and shared a common cause of helping our fellow veterans. His steadfast leadership will undoubtedly leave a void for Tolland Veterans.

Memories and Condolences to the Family and Friends of Richard Emery Tapp

It is with great sadness that my husband, Bob, and I send our deepest sympathy, love and prayers to Richard's wife, Marianne, my cousin, and family. Richard was the remarkable man who captured Marianne's heart and he will live there forever. May joyful memories of their love and life together bring strength, peace and comfort with God's Blessings to Marianne and their family and friends.

We admired Richard's values and the things he was passionate about and enjoyed hearing him discuss so many topics of interest with us and others. When my husband and I first met Richard, Bob told me that he bonded with Richard immediately because he was a U.S. Marine veteran and Bob was a U.S. Navy veteran. Bob is a Naval Academy graduate and he was surprised to learn that Richard was in the Naval Academy Marine Detachment while he was there as a Midshipman. One of Richard's duties was guarding the tomb of John Paul Jones which is underneath the Naval Academy Chapel.

Our Nation is a better place because of this admirable man's numerous contributions and service to his country. Richard touched the hearts of those who knew him and beyond. We will all miss him! Bob and I will always treasure the wonderful times we have had with Richard and Marianne's family. May God Bless you dear Richard as you rest in peace.

We had the pleasure and honour of spending many hours with Rick as he became an integral part of our eclectic group of ROMEO´s (Retired Old Men Eating Out), sharing breakfast each weekday morning at Rein´s. Deli in Vernon, Connecticut. This particular group of ROMEO´s has only three rules; 1. to what ever extent possible you walk into Rein´s you leave your politics at the door, 2, that as you walk out you carry no grudges with you and, 3 all of the staff of Rein´s are your friends and are never to be criticised. All of us who are part of this group of ROMEO´s share our deepest condolences to Marianne and the entire family and friends. As all of you do we will deeply and dearly miss him and assure you that he will always have a place in our hearts.

Rich was one of those rare individuals who anyone meeting him for the first time will immediately like and likely find common ground. He treated all he met with grace, dignity and honour and the only single exception to this were those who lacked patriotism. Rich accomplished many thing throughout his life, but it was apparent to all who had the opportunity to to know him that the two most important things for him were his family and his devotion to the Marine Code: Sempe Fi, always faithful.

He fulfilled that pledge in his work for the VA and his determination to see that two men from Tolland who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States as they fought and perished in Vietnam.

There is far more that should be said about this wonderful man but we will leave that for another time. May the Lord grant him peace.
