Samuel Haugh Obituary

1st Sgt. Samuel J. Haugh III, USA, retired, died Oct. 31, 2017, in Canon City, Colorado.

Sam was born June 6, 1939, in Hartford, eldest child of Samuel J. Haugh Jr. and Margaret (Brennan) Haugh. Sam grew up in Manchester, graduated from Manchester High School in 1958 and immediately joined the U.S. Army. Sam spent the next 21 years in the Army including three years in Vietnam, 4½ years in Panama, and at numerous stateside posts. He retired as a 1st Sgt. from 2nd Ranger Battalion 75th Infantry at Ft. Lewis, Washington in 1980 and moved with his wife Gayle and her son Jeff to Canon City. Sam served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the 23rd Inf. (Americal) Division in Vietnam. Among his awards and decorations are four Bronze Stars, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal W/7 Campaign Stars, Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, and Ranger Tab. Sam was a member of U.S. Army Ranger Association, American Legion Post 13, VFW Post 4061 and the Upper Arkansas Military Retiree Association in Canon City. He worked at the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Canon City from 1993 until its closing in 2005.

Sam was preceded in death by his loving wife Gayle; his father in 1969; his mother in 2009; brother Danny in 1975; and brother-in-law Gary Steele in 2001. He is survived by sisters Julie B. (Don) Frost of West Hartford; Nancy B.(Wally) Haugh of Key West, Florida; Margaret B. (Mike) Steele Kaczorowski of Essex; and Mary P. Haugh of Manchester; and brothers John B. (Corenda) Haugh of Bolton; Gerald B. Haugh of Coventry; and Thomas B. Haugh of Manchester; numerous nieces; a nephew; their children; many friends and acquaintances.

A special thanks to Kim and Jack Ward of Canon City for the loving care they gave Sam over the past 23 years. He was very thankful for the physical and loving support given him and he will be eternally grateful.

Holt Family Funeral Home in Canon City is in care of arrangements.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Manchester. Sam's ashes will be dispersed in Canton, Ohio.
