Thomas Ranney Obituary

Thomas W. Ranney of South Windsor, formerly of West Hartford, died Dec. 5, 2016, at home. He was the beloved husband of Gloria (Modderman) Ranney, who was holding his hand when he passed into the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ. Tom died after a valiant, courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He and his wife, Gloria, had 31 wonderful years of marriage.

Tom was born in Fair Haven, Vermont, on July 11, 1927, son of the late Clayton and Helen (Mulholland) Ranney. Mr. Ranney, after serving in the U.S. Navy in Japan, attended Dartmouth College, graduating in 1952. He taught English and history in Hawaii and at the Tilton School in New Hampshire. He later taught English at Sedgwick Middle School in West Hartford for over 25 years.

Upon retiring from teaching, Tom fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a private pilot and flew around New England for 14 years. Tom was also a part-time historic interpreter at the Mark Twain House & Museum for 35 years. To many, he was Mr. Mark Twain. Tom's love of language could be seen in being an avid reader and his love for the daily crossword puzzle.

Tom was known for his very dry sense of humor, which became known to the family as "Ranneyisms."

Besides his wife, Mr. Ranney leaves three children, Thomas and Deb Ranney of Fort Ann, New York, Kent Ranney and Carole McKee of Ellington, and Laura Ranney Robinson and her husband, Brian, of Marlborough. He also leaves his wife's children, Michael and Willa Berghuis of South Windsor, Timothy Berghuis and his wife, Jill Ainslie, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and David and Barbara Berghuis of Caledonia, Michigan. He leaves his brother, Philip Ranney of Fair Haven. He also leaves four grandchildren, Devon Ranney, Nathan Ranney, Katy Berghuis Pastoor and her husband, Andrew, and Michael T. Berghuis. He was predeceased by his son, Lawrence Ranney; and his brother, Richard Ranney.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, at 11 a.m., at the Avery Street Christian Reformed Church, 661 Avery St., South Windsor. His family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be private at the request of his family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Thomas' name to the Mark Twain House & Museum c/o The Development Department, 351 Farmington Ave., Hartford, CT 06105-4401; and/or the American Parkinson's Disease Association Inc., P.O. Box 718, Mystic, CT 06372.

Wheresoever he was, there was Eden. (Mark Twain on the death of his wife, Olivia).

It is a great loss of a wonderful man and teacher. As I edit many documents through the day, I realize it is the training of my mind that he provided me in 7th grade back in the late 70's that still guides me today. For an engineer who loves to edit the English language for proper usage, I owe all the basics to Mr. Ranney. Whenever I see an Almanac type article, I picture him at the head of the class, leaning on his desk and saying. "Class, today is ..... and reading the article."

A true gentleman that has gone home to the Lord. May his family have peace he is Home.

IN REMEMBRANCE OF TOM RANNEY

As a friend of Gloria and Tom, I recall the years we enjoyed and shared as Historical Interpreters of the Mark Twain House and in recent times, my time with Gloria as interpreters for the Harriet Beecher Stowe Museum. Although Tom retired after decades as the supreme interpreter at Twain, his imprint was well recognized and acknowledged.

Tom's life encompassed so much and impressed so many. People from all walks of life loved Tom's engaging ability as story teller and Historian who gave depth and breadth to the legendary Sam Clemens and the oasis known as Nook Farm. With Tom's agile depictions, visitors enjoyed an added treat of interesting humorous asides which enhanced the tour and made it memorable.

Tom had many interests and talents. His love for his wife and family, including the ever present family cats, are all part of my recollections of a life well lived.

With deepest affection and condolences to Gloria and family

Sending my condolences to the family of Mr Ranney. I had Mr Ranney for 7th grade English at Sedgwick in the 80\'s. I\'ll never ever forget him reading to us the daily Almanac... every morning in the driest non expressive voice. He was hilarious with his dry sense of humor.
May light perpetual shine upon him, and may his family be comforted knowing he is in the presence of Our Lord.
Sincerely,
Tracy Parke

Tom was one of my favorite people during my years at The Mark Twain House. His dry wit and encyclopedic knowledge made him a fascinating colleague. My sincere condolences.

I had the pleasure of having Mr. Ranney in 8th grade at Sedgwick Middle School. I am now 41 years old. By reading all of these sentiments, his teaching spanned decades. My sympathies to you all.

Apologies to Sam Clemens for liberties taken...

Warm summer sun, Shine kindly there,
Warm southen wind, Blow softly there.
Green sod above, Lie light, lie light.
Good night dear heart, Good night.

I would like to extend my condolences to the Ranney family. Mr. Ranney was my 8th grade English teacher in 1962 at Sedgwick Jr. High. I will be 71 years old in several days and throughout the years I have often thought of him and what a wonderful teacher he was. May he rest in peace.
