Vincent Spanilo Obituary

Vincent P. Spanilo, 65, a lifelong resident of Enfield, was welcomed home to our heavenly Father on Nov. 1, 2016, All Saints Day.

His final days were spent surrounded by family and cared for by the transplant nurses, doctors, and staff at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was a blessing and an inspiration to all who knew him.

Vinnie is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife, Debbie, of 43 years; his son, Vincent G. Spanilo, two daughters, Haley Spanilo-Scott, and Jennifer S. Hawkins and her husband, Christopher, all of Enfield; four grandchildren, Maliek, Lily, Landon, and Addison; three brothers, Ernest Spanilo and his wife, Pauline, of Agawam, Massachusetts, Raymond Spanilo and his wife, Elaine, of Glastonbury, Joseph Spanilo and his wife, Barbara, of Burlington; two sisters, Jane Butterworth and her husband, Ken, of Westbrook, and Nancy Johnson, of Spokane, Washington; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves Larry Ruffino, his childhood and lifelong friend, brother of his heart.

After graduating from Enfield High School in 1969, Vinnie enlisted in the military, where he served 28 years in the Connecticut Air National Guard and retired at the rank of chief master sergeant. Vinnie was regarded as one of the U.S. Air Force's foremost experts in the field of aviation fuel facility design and management. He was a mentor to countless airmen, who valued his wisdom and insight on gaining an education, working hard, and thriving as a non-commissioned officer. Following his diagnosis of end-stage pulmonary fibrosis, Vinnie received a lung transplant Nov. 6, 2000. With his new lung and a renewed appreciation for life, he completed his bachelor's degree at University of Connecticut and graduated with a master's degree in psychology and counseling from Vermont College in 2005. His education and personal journey pre- and post-transplant motivated Vinnie to counsel others with the psycho-social aspects of transplantation. In 2008, Vinnie received another gift of life from Col. Jack Swift, a beloved friend who walked the same spiritual path as Vinnie. Jack selflessly donated a kidney, allowing Vinnie to continue his mission on Earth for another eight years.

Vinnie dedicated himself to helping others and was part of many organizations, including the American Legion - John Maciolek Post 154 and the Enfield Conference of Christian Churches. He was founder of the Enfield Men's Christian Fellowship Group, a participant in the 2002 Transplant Olympics, a volunteer for the American Lung Association, and an active participant in the MGH Lung Transplant Support Group. His final contribution to this physical world was the donation of his corneas after his death. Vinnie's spirit will live on in the lives of all who knew him. He was a fighter until the end and is a testament of his unwavering faith. He believed that life is good, but with God it is better.

Visitation hours will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 1518 King St., Enfield (please meet at church). Burial, with military honors, will follow at Hazardville Cemetery.

Donations in Vinnie's memory may be made to Massachusetts General Hospital, Lung Transplant Support Group, Development Office, 125 Nashua St., Suite 540, Boston, MA 02114, or to Donate Life of Connecticut, P.O. Box 278, Durham, CT 06422.

Dearest Vinnie, Thank you so much for who you are in the Lord. The connection that God put in place between you and me; so many times humbled my heart. You loved the Lord, and it showed in your faithfulness. Thank you for loving as Jesus loved, understanding as Jesus did. I will always remember you and be thankful to our Lord for the times we shared.

My beloved Mother passed away Oct 3, 2001 from Pulmonary Fibrosis at the age of 50. Tonight (16 years after her death) I discovered a slip of paper tucked into a shoe box of prayers & notes. In her handwriting it reads: posted by Vincent Spainilo May 29,1997 46 years old. So I googled him and was touched by such an obituary. God bless everyone.

My condolences are late in coming. I serve as a very part-time pastor in Enfield, and I just learned today at the ecumenical Good Friday service of Vinnie's death. When I joined the Enfield Conference of Christian Churches, Vinnie's was the warmest welcome. He attended our worship on occasion (Enfield American Baptist Church) and even came to a pot luck birthday party I held one winter evening. He was gracious and loving--always with a smile. I was looking forward to seeing him today, then saddened to learn of his death. I'm confident that the promise of resurrection means Vinnie was and is still with us, in ways we cannot understand or even always feel. My prayers are with you as you remember him this Easter.

Deb and family I am so sorry for your loss. Vinnie will live forever now and will meet us when it is our time to go. Vinnie was a great inspiration to me and a great friend. If not for him I don't think my transplant would not have been a success. I will miss him greatly. I'm sorry I couldn't be there for service but I was in transit to my new home in Arkansas. once settled I will send a card. God Bless.

Vinnie will always have a place in my heart where life long friends reside. My fondest memories reach back to high school. He never seemed to take note of his popularity and he was always, just my friend. Through the years, we kept in touch, and I can tell you that his life revolved around his family and the Lord. He was so grateful for Deb, who he referred to as his angel. He was so proud of his much loved children and grandchildren. He loved the Lord and was a good servant. I know that he is with our Lord, basking in his love and light. I will miss you, my friend.
Rest in peace.

To Debbie and the Entire Spanilo family, Vinny will be sorely missed and remembered always. I am extremely grateful for the time Vinny took to mentor me and show me how to be a good and honest person, and leader. He was the first member of the CTANG that I met and I immediately knew I wanted to be a part of the section he was in. I refer back to things he showed me almost everyday, and I find myself asking what would Vinny do. Know that my thoughts and prayers are with your family, God Bless You

Debbie & Family, Vinnie & I go back many years in the CTANG. But most of my memories of Vinnie will be our times we spent together with Fred Press for weekly Bible Study during lunch hour at my office. I have no doubt that Vinnie's arrival before our Lord and Savior was met with the Lord greeting him with the words "Well Done My Good and Faithful Servant".
