Wayne Stroup Obituary

Wayne B. Stroup, formerly of Enfield, died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014. He was 83. Wayne was the beloved husband of Jayne with whom he recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Born in a farmhouse on Feb. 7, 1931, he was raised in Aberdeen, S.D. Wayne joined the Navy and met Jayne who was from Maine and in the Army. They were married while stationed in Virginia. Wayne's 20-year Navy career included many months of active duty on ships traveling all over the world, including the Mediterranean and North Atlantic. He also completed Officer Training School, attended night school during his full-time Navy career, earning a bachelor's degree. After he retired as a Navy officer, they settled in Enfield and he worked for the Hartford Insurance Group. During his semi-retirement years, Wayne drove a children's school bus for the Enfield school system. During those military years, Wayne and Jayne moved from state to state always making many friends. Besides serving our country, Wayne also served his church community in whatever state they lived in, especially his beloved Enfield Congregational Church family. Wayne was a teacher of Christian education to both children and adults and served as a Deacon for many years.

In addition to his wife, Jayne, Wayne is survived by his loving children and their spouses, Jeffery and Linda Stroup of Littleton, Colo., and Jayne and Thomas Nyquist of Newtown, Pa.; his sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and James Stroh of Tomah, Wis. Wayne was a beloved and proud grandfather of five grandsons, Eric (Lindsay), Michael, Andrew, Matthew, and Sean.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Twining Manor for the loving care they provided for our father and grandfather.

Family and friends are invited to Wayne's memorial service on Friday, Feb. 28, at the Newtown Presbyterian Church, Washington Avenue, Newtown, Penn., at 11 a.m. Interment is private at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Enfield Congregational Church, 1295 Enfield St., Enfield, CT 06082.
