Bill and I were good friends growing up in Freeport. Only in those days it was Willie. We went to school together starting in junior high right through high school. We were two of the four man team of debaters that won the conference championship. We advanced to the state finals.
I don’t know why he was not valedictorian of our class of ‘52. He must have been in the top five.
One memory sticks with me. In junior high we decided we wanted to learn to play tennis. So we looked it up in the encyclopedia and learned the rules and the scoring and found some old racquets and a ball the dog had played with and off to Read Park we went. I learned good-I lettered in high school and college and still play every week. That first time was over 70 years ago.
Willie was a good friend- Rest In Peace my friend.

Bill and I were best friends growing up in Freeport. Only it wasn’t Bill-it was Willie. We met in junior high and were friends through high school. He lived with his brother at his grandmothers home near Read Park. It was on my way to high school so I usually stopped by and we walked to school together.
I don’t know why he was not valedictorian of our class of ‘52. He must certainly been in the top five. We were on the debate team together-we won the conference championship and were good enough to advance to the state finals.
When in junior high we decided we’d like to learn how to play tennis. We looked in the encyclopedia and learned the rules and the scoring. We got ahold of some old racquets and found a ball the dog had played with-no fuzz-and to Read Park we went. We learned-I lettered in high school and college and play weekly now.
So Willy and I were buddies. He certainly attained much status in his life. I hope he remembered his Freeport days.
