Cary Dean Thorp, Jr.
January 31, 1936 - July 11, 2022
Cary Dean "Bud" Thorp died Monday, July 11, surrounded by his loving family. Bud was the youngest son of Cary Dean and Imogene Thorp and was raised first in New London and then in Columbia, MO. Bud studied Journalism at the University of Missouri and ultimately went on to earn a Ph.D. in Business. Bud taught human resources management in the College of Business Administration at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for 33 years.
Bud had many interests and brought joy wherever he went. With his wife, Peggy, he was an avid dancer and spent many happy years in the faculty dance club and at the regular dances held at the Auld Center in Lincoln. Bud was also an active volunteer with Pony Club for twenty years, where he was loved by generations of children and their parents who knew him as the master organizer of events, a person who always had a smile on his face and a willingness to help wherever he was needed.
Bud loved animals, which was apparent to everyone. Whether it was walking his dog Suku five miles a day, taking care of horses or visiting with Therapy Dogs, Bud's face would light up with joy. No matter where he went or who he met there was always a smile on his face; one of his chief delights was in making other people happy.
Bud was an amazing husband and family man. He supported his daughters in their many endeavors and was always there to cheer them on at violin recitals and horse shows. He and his wife, Peggy, shared 61 years together. Virtually inseparable, everyone knew them as "Bud and Peggy". Together they danced, played cards, worked puzzles, and petted every dog they could find.
Bud is survived by his wife Peggy Thorp, daughters Mindy Hunke (Chris) and Shawna Lichtenwalner (Craig), and granddaughter Katie Hunke.
Celebration of life: 12:00 p.m. Saturday, July 16, at Butherus, Maser and Love, 4040 A Street, Lincoln, NE. Visitation 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with family present 5-7 Friday, July 15. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bud's honor may be made to the Healing Hearts Therapy Dogs or Capital Humane Society.

My condolences to Peggy and family! I am sorry to hear of Dr. Thorp's passing. He was a great professor and colleague to me in the business college. He was a member of my PhD committee and when I became a faculty member my office was next to his. He was a very kind and compassionate scholar. My hope is that you find comfort and joy in the memories you have of him.

Peggy, I'm so sorry to learn of Cary's Passing on.
You and Bud ALWAYS had a SMILE and kind words when I would go on break from the bands. Two FINE people, you were so lucky to have one another.
I used to refer to Bud as Dr. Thorp. He would always tell me,..."It's just Bud" of which I would always reply. "I know how hard you worked and the dedication it took to earn that PHD., If I had a PHD,.....Bud, I'd want to be called DR. --- 24 hours a day! He always laughed. What a GREAT GUY! --- Fond memories.
Take comfort, those who love, will be reunited in eternity.

He was one of my favorite professors when I worked in the Department of Management. We always laughed that I got him a stall pitch fork for him to clean out horse stalls. I told him he just thought he was done working! I was just thinking out him last week. Prayers to you Peggy and your family.
